Bloomfield Hills Marian Takes Home Michigan Lower Peninsula Division 2 Swimming and Diving Title

HOLLAND – The Bloomfield Hills Marian High School girls’ swimming and diving team captured the Michigan Lower Peninsula Division 2 Swimming and Diving title on Nov. 22 at the Holland Community Aquatic Center. The team scored 231.5 points to edge Ann Arbor Skyline (220 points) and Portage Central (219.5 points) for the girls’ team title.

Seaholm picked up the first win of the meet in the 200 medley relay as Mykala Arnold, Celia Hoag, Linnea Anderson and Allie Russell posted a time of 1:45.22 to top Ann Arbor Skyline’s Emma Cleason, Hebe Clarke, Katie Orringer and Katie Portz (1:46.07). Annette Schultz, Lizzy Merriman, Kate Mesaros and Gretchen Schultz gave Dexter a third place showing with their 1:46.27.

After qualifying first in prelims of the 200 free with a 1:47.88, Bloomfield Hill Marian’s Mollie Pulte held onto her top position by just over a tenth, out-touching Ann Arbor Skyline’s Katie Portz for the state title, 1:48.28 to 1:48.43. Dexter’s Annette Schultz pulled away from the field to take second in 1:50.56.

In the 200 IM final, Rochester Adams’ Nicole Pape and Ann Arbor Skyline’s Emma Cleason traded leads throughout the race before Pape got her hand on the wall first, 2:02.74 to 2:02.88. Both swimmers dropped almost three seconds from their prelim times. Portage Central’s Madison Umberger rounded out the top three in 2:06.03.

Bloomfield Hills Marian got its second win of the day in the 50 free, as sophomore Sophia Schott just out-touched Grosse Pointe South’s Catie DeLoof for the win, 23.66 to 23.68. Jenison’s Ileah Doctor also broke 24 in the final, touching third in 23.96.

Forest Hills Central’s Erin Neely set a new Division 2 state record in the 1-meter diving final, scoring 450.75 points to top Allie Murphy’s 442.80 from 2012. Claire Stam of Northview finished second with 427.25 points, while White Lake-Lakeland’s Angela Probstfeld placed third with 400.60 points.

A second Division 2 state record went down in the 100 fly as Holland’s Taylor Garcia shaved .06 off her own 2013 record with a 53.95. She just missed Maddie Wright’s overall state record of 53.88. Ann Arbor Skyline’s Emma Cleason picked up another top three finish with a 56.23, while Forest Hills Central’s Felicity Buchmaier came in third with a 56.68.

Bloomfield Hills Marian’s Mollie Pulte went two-for-two in her individual events by adding a second state title in the 100 free. Pulte stopped the clock in 50.21 to just miss her own Division 2 record of 49.87 from last year. Ann Arbor Skyline’s Katie Portz edged Grosse Pointe South’s Catie DeLoof for second, 50.58 to 50.59.

Bay City Western’s Krissy Harmon ran away with the 500 free state title, finishing eight seconds ahead of the rest of the heat with a 4:55.38. That lowered Jessica Powers’ 2010 Division 2 record of 4:56.50 by more than a second. Emma Bradley of North Farmington swam a 5:03.80 to maintain her second place seed, while Harrison’s Emily Brunett came in third with a 5:05.77.

The foursome of Christina Schott, Sophia Schott, Hannah Richard and Mollie Pulte from Bloomfield Hills Marian nearly lowered another Division 2 record in the 200 free relay, but they came up .12 short with a 1:35.24. Grosse Pointe South’s Jackie DeLoof, Brigit Jogan, Amy Krausmann and Catie DeLoof tracked down second in 1:37.25, followed by Jenison’s Jenn Blanchard, Ileah Doctor, Taylor Arnold and Morgan VanderSchaaf (1:38.10).

Holland’s Taylor Garcia earned her second state title of the meet in the 100 back, finishing just off her prelim time of 53.13 with a 53.37. Claire Young of Grosse Pointe South touched in 55.93 to beat Portage Central’s Madison Umberger (55.98) for second.

Seaholm’s Celia Hoag dropped two tenths from her prelim time to win the 100 breast final in 1:03.66, almost half a second in front of Rochester Adams’ Nicole Pape (1:04.08). Grosse Pointe South picked up another top three finish with Alex Hughes taking third in 1:04.90.

Bloomfield Hills Marian wrapped up the team title with a win in the 400 free relay as Sophia Schott, Christina Schott, Kailyn Swantek and Mollie Pulte posted a 3:27.64 to barely defeat Ann Arbor Skyline’s Emma Cleason, Kaelan Oldani, Georgia Mosher and Katie Portz, who touched in 3:27.70. Dexter’s Gretchen Schultz, Allison Franz, Sarah Daugherty and Annette Schultz passed a couple other schools to finish third in 3:31.62.
