Big College Recruit Commitment Update Including Swimming World Six Stars Amber McDermott, Rebecca Rainer

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 19. IT was an extremely busy weekend on the college commitment scene for the recruits of the Class of 2011. It also included another pair of Swimming World six stars coming off the board.

Six star Amber McDermott, who maintains her profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings, is a distance specialist who will be headed to the University of Georgia.

"I am really excited to begin my college swimming career next year at Georgia," McDermott told Swimming World. "Coach [Jack] Bauerle, and his staff (Coaches Harvey Humphries & Carol Capitani) were the main reason I chose to commit to Georgia. They made me feel welcome, and all the swimmers were outgoing and friendly. They have great facilities, and are very strong academically. Also, being in Athens, I will get to swim against my older sister, Courtney, who is a freshman this year at Emory in Atlanta. I am excited to help Georgia win SEC and NCAA championships. GO DAWGS!!!"

McDermott swims for Cascade Swim Team and preps at Jackson High. She's an immediate NCAA Division I scoring threat as her top times in the 500-yard free (4:38.89) and 400-yard IM (4:09.33) would have qualified her for last year's A finals at the 2010 NCAA Division I Championships.

Six star Rebecca Rainer, who maintains her profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings, is a breaststroker who will be headed to the University of Florida.

"I chose Florida because I knew that the coaching staff there, like many others, was amazing, but they are also different because of the many years of experience and years they have dedicated to coaching the Florida team," Rainer told Swimming World. "I feel like I clicked with the team really well and I believe that if I put in the hard work there that I plan to do in the next four years, they will help me reach my all goals and get me to where I want to be."

Rainer swims for NOVA of Virginia and preps at Deep Run High. She's also an immediate scoring threat at the NCAA Division I level as three of her top times (100-yard breast (1:00.82), 200-yard breast (2:11.54) and 400-yard IM (4:10.21) would have qualified her for B finals at the 2010 NCAA Division I Championships.

Five star Nicole Vernon, who maintains her profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings, is an all-around threat who will be headed to the University of Georgia.

"I just felt like it was the best place for me," Vernon told Swimming World. "My gut feeling was always telling me to go to Georgia regardless of where my heart was. It was my first recruiting trip I took, and I immediately fell in love with it. Swimming and school-wise, I think it is beyond perfect for me, and I am so excited to be a part of the Bulldog family!"
