Bevy of FINA Masters World Records Bettered at SPMA Short Course Meet

PHOENIX, Arizona, December 15. THIRTY-ONE individual and three relay FINA Masters world records were bettered at the Southern Pacific Masters Association's short course meters regional meet, held Dec. 5-7 in Long Beach, Calif.

Laura Val of Tampalpais Masters and Keefe Lodwig of Nebraska Masters led the way with four world records each.

Val, 57, continues to clean up in the 55-59 age group. She swam faster than her own world records in the 100 free (1:01.40), 200 free (2:14.62), 100 fly (1:09.38) and 400 IM (5:41.08). Lodwig, 65, swam faster than the world records in the 65-69 age group in the 50 free (26.68), 100 free (59.60), 200 free (2.16.27) and 50 fly (29.79).

Robert Strand, 62 of The Olympic Club, was responsible for three new world records: 50 breast (32.79), 100 breast (1:13.33) and 200 breast (2:43.32).

Setting two world records each at the meet were:

* Rich Abrahams, 63: 100 free (56.63) and 50 fly (27.87) in the 60-64 age group;
* Richard Burns, 65: 50 back (31.64) and 400 IM (5:56.22) in the 65-69 age group;
* Jeff Commings, 34: 50 breast (28.01) and 100 breast (1:01.34) in the 30-34 age group;
* David Guthrie, 48: 100 breast (1:06.39, tied world record) and 200 breast (2:25.89) in the 45-49 age group;
* Sherri Hart, 37: 50 back (29.25) and 100 back (1:02.62) in the 35-39 age group;
* Erik Hochstein, 40: 50 free (23.25) and 200 IM (2:07.71) in the 40-44 age group;
* Ken Shilling, 51: 100 IM (1:02.51) and 200 IM (2:14.53) in the 50-54 age group.

Notably, Hochstein swam under the existing world mark in the 100 free, but that time was bettered by Mike Ross the same day.

Swimming faster than one world record time at the meet were:

Jenny Cook, 50: 200 fly (2:38.73) in the 50-54 age group;

Traci Granger, 50: 50 fly (30.60) in the 50-54 age group;

Alistair Cockburn, 55: 50 back (29.41) in the 55-59 age group;

Jeff Farrell, 71: 50 free (27.70) in the 70-74 age group;

Anders Rasmussen, 45: 50 back (27.20).

Three relay word records were bettered at the meet:

Southern California Aquatics' men's 200 free relay in the 160-199 age group (Hochstein, Andriole, Beach, Wegner): 1:35.52;

San Diego Masters' men's 200 free relay in the 280-319 age group (Freshley, Webster, Andersen, van Baalen): 2:00.82;

San Diego Masters' men's 200 medley relay in the 280-319 age group (van Baalen, Andersen, Freshley, Webster): 2:15.49.
