Ben McDade Leads Monona Grove To Victory at Wisconsin Division 2 High School State Championships

MADISON—Monona Grove freshman Ben McDade had a standout night at the Wisconsin Division 2 boys high school state championship meet on Friday.

Monona Grove won the meet with 309 points. McFarland was second with 267, and the boys of Shorewood were third with 213 points.

The meet opened with Whitewater’s 200 medley relay team Wentau Guo (26.04), Benny Liang (26.14) Jonathon Zimdars (22.49) and Jason Shelbourn (22.19) touching first with a 1:36.86. The McFarland relay team of Joe Heiser (24.84), Sam Mischio (27.75), Justin Harrington (23.38) and Noah Ruhde (21.15) touched second in 1:37.12, and Shorewood’s Henri Carignan (25.81), Joseph Lock (28.04), Michael Perry (23.13) and Joe Stephenson (21.84) finishing third in 1:38.82.

Monona Grove’s McDade was able to edge out Shorewood’s Michael Perry (1:42.79) in the 200 free with a 1:42.50 for a first place finish. This would be just the beginning of momentum for the Monona Grove boys.

The sophomore-senior duo of Erik Doll and Lars Doll scored some crucial points for Monona Grove in the 100 free. While Grafton’s Bailey Bodart claimed first with a 47.51, Erik Doll was able to grab second with a 47.91 with Lars Doll joining them in the top three with a 48.07.

Shorewood’s Michael Perry swam an impressive 50.78 to claim first and out touch Shawano Community Zach Soper’s 50.88.

McDade was back at it again in the 500 free dropping nine seconds from his seed time of 4:46.42 to claim first with a 4:37.04. Brookfield Academy senior Kevin Van Cleave was not too far behind touching the wall in 4:38.91 for second. DeForest senior Nick Potter was third with a 4:44.95.

The sprinting duo of Erik Doll (22.03) and Lars Doll (21.11) joined with seniors Josh Jones (21.91) and Alex Kimmel (21.04) to grab first in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:26.09. The McFarland relay of Maxwell Donagan (22.33), Billy Mueting (22.20), Alex Wolff (22.05) and Noah Ruhde (21.35) were second in 1:27.93. Shorewood’s Tommy Chamberlain (23.26), Joseph Lock (22.59), Joe Stephenson (21.58) and Lucas Barry (22.16) finished third in 1:29.59.

Shawano Community’s Soper led in the 100 back with an impressive 50.00. Edgewood’s Philip Fochios claimed second in 53.24, while McFarland’s Joe Heiser was third in 53.65.

The night ended with the Monona Grove 400 free relay team of Alex Kimmell (48.60), Erik Doll (48.19), Ben McDade (47.07) and Lars Doll (48.19) taking first in 3:12.05. McFarland’s Joe Heiser (48.92), Justin Harrington (48.28), Alex Wolff (49.53) and Maxwell Donagan (47.82) grabbed second with a 3:14.55. The Shorewood team of Henri Carignan (49.82), Joe Stephenson (48.98), Alex Borut (50.06) and Michael Perry (46.75) were third in 3:15.61.
