Belgian Long Course Championships: Annelies De Mare Clears Belgian Record

ANTWERP, Belgium, May 15. THE first night of action at the Belgian Long Course Championships featured a Belgian record being cleared in Antwerp.

Annelies De Mare checked in with a winning time of 55.71 in the women's 100 free. That performance ecplised the Belgian record of 55.78 set by Jolien Sysmans last year at this meet. Sysmans placed second in 56.44, while Nina Van Koeckhoven picked up third in 57.03.

Kimberly Buys snagged the women's 100 fly title in 59.81, while Germany's Iris Rosenberger finished second in 1:01.45. Pia Caenepeel completed the top three in 1:03.08. Buys doubled up with a winning time of 30.02 in the women's 50 back. Elodie Vanhamme placed second in 30.22, while Ellen Deolet finished third in 31.22.

In a close contest, Pholien Systermans touched out Dieter Dekoninck, 1:50.89 to 1:50.93, in the men's 200 free. Axel Vandevelde wound up third overall in 1:51.51. Jens Verheyen closed out the men's 50 breast in 29.60 for the win. Pedro Agostinho (29.81) and Bjoern Balliu (29.86) took second and third.

Jolien Vermeylen pocketed the women's 200 breast crown in 2:30.95. Fanny Lecluyse placed second in 2:31.38, while Kim Janssens took third in 2:31.93. Glenn Surgeloose followed in the men's 200 fly with a winning time of 2:00.76. Egon Van Der Straeten placed second in 2:02.69, while Miguel Diogo touched third in 2:04.72.

Ken Cortens claimed the men's 400 IM title in 4:31.34 with Mathieu Mattelaer earning second in 4:31.66. Kjel De Hertog finished a distant third in 4:46.02. Lecluyse garnered her second podium of the day with a 4:56.26 to win the women's 400 IM after a second-place finish in the 200 breast. Vermeylen, who topped Lecluyse in the 200 breast, finished second in 4:57.09. Katrien Maes rounded out the top three in 4:57.56.

Sander Helderweirt won the men's 200 back in 2:04.43 to conclude the first night. Louis Croenen took second in 2:05.33, while Charles Navarre grabbed third in 2:07.01.
