Beijing Olympic Torch Relay Route Defined; Torch Design Released

BEIJING, China, April 26. THE Beijing Olympic Organizing Committee announced the official Olympic Torch Relay route as well as the torch design during a ceremony held in the China Millennium Monument in Beijing today.

According to a release posted on the Beijing Olympic web site, "the planned route would last 130 days and travel 137,000 kilometers (or 85,127.83 miles)."

The Olympic Flame will be lit in Olympia, Greece according to tradition on March 25, 2008 and will travel through the following cities before reaching Beijing on March 31, 2008.

There will also be an attempt to take the flame to the highest peak in the world of Mt. Qomolangma (commonly known as Mt. Everest). During the arrival ceremony for the flame into China on March 31, 2008, one of the lanterns with the Olympic Flame will be kept aside. The torchbearer team will then attempt to take the Flame to the highest peak on a day in May that presents the best climatic conditions for the ascent.
