Beata Nelson Sets National High School Record, Arrowhead Wins Wisconsin Girls’ Division 1 High School Swimming Championships

MADISON – Highlighted by a national high school record from Verona Area’s Beata Nelson, Arrowhead High School took home the Wisconsin Girls’ Division 1 Swimming and Diving title yesterday at the UW Natatorium on the campus of the University of Wisconsin.

Arrowhead kicked off the Division 1 meet with a come-from-behind win in the 200 medley relay as Alyssa Lewandowski, Lindsay Adamski, Megan Doty and Maddie Barta overtook Verona Area’s Beata Nelson, Kristi Larsen, Sammy Seymour and Shelby Rozeboom for the win, 1:43.96 to 1:44.63. Verona Area had a nearly three second advantage after the first 50, thanks to a 24.62 lead-off split from Nelson. Middleton’s Victoria Lin, Emma Karbusicky, Chiara Pierobon Mays and Caroline Hippen touched third in 1;46.85.

In the 200 free, Cedarburg junior Katie Drabot picked up a four second win and lowered her own Division I state record in the process with a 1:45.40. She’d set the previous mark of 1:46.08 last year. Arrowhead’s Sarah Laabs tracked down second with a 1:49.40, while Waukesha South’s Molly Manchon swam a 1:50.54 for third.

Waukesha South picked up another podium finish in the 200 IM, as junior Kierston Farley-Sepe blasted to a win in 2:00.91. Arrowhead teammates Megan Doty (2:02.11) and Lindsay Adamski (2:03.75) finished second and third to pick up valuable points in the team race.

Kelly Jacob of Arrowhead proved to be the top sprinter in the 50 free final as her 23.13 bettered Pulaski’s Corrin VanLanen (23.33) and Madison Memorial’s Tory Center (23.37).

Neenah’s Hazel Hertting destroyed the 1-meter diving state record, earning 576.45 points to crush Lauren LeRoy’s 2003 record of 502.45. Second and third place finishers Cassidy Bose of Racine Case (531.40) and Katrina Voge of Franklin (519.55) also finished well over the old record.

Verona Area’s Beata Nelson made history in the 100 fly, lowering the national high school record and 15-16 national age group record in the event with a 51.70. Katie McLaughlin held the previous records of 51.78, which she set in California while swimming for St. Margarita High School. Nelson also lowered her own state record of 52.06. Arrowhead’s Megan Doty came in second at 53.57, while Pulaski’s Corrin VanLanen touched third in 55.32.

Individual event winners Kelly Jacob of Arrowhead and Kierston Farley-Sepe of Waukesha South met in the 100 free with a perfect two-for-two record on the line. At the wall, 100 free champ Jacob added to her win total with a 50.73, two tenths in front of Farley-Sepe’s 50.96. Skylar Fore of Cedarburg finished about half a second behind in third at 51.43.

Katie Drabot of Cedarburg won her second individual state title and demolished another state record in the 500 free, taking more than five seconds off Aja Van Hout’s 2008 record of 4:48.60 with a 4:43.09. Arrowhead’s Sarah Laabs touched 10 seconds back in 4:53.98, followed by Sun Prairie’s Rachel Powers in 4:54.37.

Paced by a 21.83 anchor split by Beata Nelson, Verona Area established a new state record in the 200 free relay. Maizie Seidl, Kristi Larsen, Shelby Rozeboom and Nelson stopped the clock in 1:33.51 to shave .12 off Madison East’s 2008 record of 1:33.63. Arrowhead’s Kelly Jacob, Sarah Laabs, Abby Cabush and Maddie Barta swam a 1:34.91 to take second ahead of Cedarburg’s Lillie Hosack, Jessica Short, Kathryn Mohr and Katie Drabot (1:35.15).

Shortly after leading her team to a win in the 200 free relay, Verona Area’s Beata Nelson returned to set another state record in the 100 back with a 53.15, cutting .04 off her own record of 53.19 from last year. Appleton North’s Britt Horn touched out Arrowhead’s Maddie Barta for second, 56.76 to 56.79.

Nicolet’s Gwen Worlton and Arrowhead’s Lindsay Adamski treated the crowd at UW Natatorium to a great finish in the 100 breast, as Adamski took the lead at the 50 before Worlton came charging home to win by .03, 1:02.73 to 1:02.76. Muskego’s Lauren Stigler, who actually turned second at the halfway point, wound up third in 1:03.23.

Arrowhead capped their state team title with a victory in the 400 free relay, thanks to Kelly Jacob, Sarah Laabs, Abby Cabush and Megan Doty, who touched first in 3:23.67. Cedarburg fought its way into second, with Skylar Fore, Kathryn Mohr, Jessica Short and Katie Drabot registering a time of 3:25.19. Drabot anchored in 48.01 to track down Waukesha South’s Molly Manchon, Kennedy Tranel, Addison Skogman and Kierston Farley-Sepe (3:26.05).

Arrowhead ran away with the team title, scoring 337 points to top Cedarburg (224 points) by more than 100 points. Waukesha South claimed third with 222 points, while Verona Area (180 points) and Madison Memorial (127 points) rounded out the top five.
