Augie Busch & Arizona Receives First Verbal Commit: Magnolia’s Monica Gumina

NEW COMMIT: Texas state champion, Monica Gumina, recently became the first individual to verbally commit to the University of Arizona under newly appointed head coach Augie Busch as a member of the Class of 2022.

Gumina, a senior at Concordia Lutheran High School in Tomball, Texas, is a 3x individual state champion. She won both the 100 and 200 freestyles at the 2017 TAPPS State Division 1 Championships, and won the 100 free as a sophomore at the Woodlands College Park High School. She also anchored both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays to victory in 2017.

The rising senior competes year round with Magnolia Aquatic Club, recently swimming the 50, 100, 200, and 400 freestyles at the Speedo Junior National Championships this summer. She also competed in the 50, 100, and 200 freestyles, plus the 100 back at the Speedo Winter Junior Nationals last December.

Gumina commented via her announcement on Twitter,

I’m SO excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim for the University of Arizona!! BEAR DOWN!

She will join a talented group of freestylers at Arizona, sharing the pool with Katrina Konopka, Ashley Sutherland, Sarah Shimomura, and Emma McCarthy for one year, and for two years with Hannah Cox and Kirsten Jacobsen.

Gumina’s best times in SCY:

50 Free – 23.45
100 Free – 50.21
200 Free – 1:47.27
50 Back – 26.89
100 Back – 57.98

Gumina’s best 200 free time puts her just outside of the Top 16 at the 2017 Pac 12 Championships, while her 100 free would have finished 16th overall.
