NEW COMMIT: Auburn University has gained a new verbal commitment from Cumming, Ga. native Lleyton Smith, who will join the Tigers as a member of the class of 2023.

Smith trains and competes year-round with Swim Atlanta under head coach Landon Harris and is a U.S. Open qualifier in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. He finished 19th overall in the 100m back last month at Junior Nationals and finished 11th in the same event at Juniors East in December.

Smith also swims for Lambert High School and is a three-time GHSA 6A/7A State Championship qualifier. He led off Lambert’s runner-up 4×50 free relay and their bronze-medal-winning 4×50 medley relay at State during his junior season. He earned the silver in the 100 back; the winner of the event, Aidan Stoffle, will be Smith’s future teammate at Auburn next fall.

He told Swimming World:

“I’m very excited to swim at Auburn in the upcoming years with the great new coaching staff and new teammates. I know that I’ll be in good hands and will definitely be able to take my swimming to the next level. As for right now, I’ll continue to train at Swim Atlanta and look to improve my times so that I can come into Auburn in top condition.”

His best times include:

  • 100 back – 49.03
  • 200 back – 1:46.63
  • 100 fly – 51.33
  • 50 free – 22.07
  • 200 IM – 1:58.82

Smith will make a huge splash for the Tigers when he suits up for the 2019-20 season and will add more depth to their backstroke group that’ll include Stoffle, David Crossland and Christian Ginieczki.
