Auburn Sweeps Texas A&M in SEC Showdown

The Auburn men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept Texas A&M on Wednesday in the first meet of the new year for both teams.

In the men’s meet, No. 9 Auburn defeated the No. 8 Aggies 167.5-132.5.

Aubrun won the 200 medley relay with Aidan Stoffle, Reid Mikuta, Nate Stoffle and Kalle Makinen touching the wall in 1:26.77.

Christian Sztolcman, Ryan Husband and Mikkel Gadgaard made sure to pile up the points in the 200 free. The trio hit the wall second, third and fourth. Sztolcman returned to winning form in the 100 (44.16).

Aidan Stoffle (46.98), Nate Stoffle (47.51) and Lleyton Smith (48.83) flew to the final wall for a sweep on the men’s side in the 100 back.

The Stoffles were on display again in 100 fly. Aidan picked up his second win of the day (47.87) while Nate took second (48.05) for Auburn.

Mikuta hit the wall almost a second ahead of the closest swimmer, finishing in 53.96.

Transfer Mihalis Deliyiannis won the 50 free, touching in at 20.16, just one-tenth ahead of Kalle Makinen.

A nearly perfect day in the pool culminated in Auburn’s most resounding win of the afternoon. Aidan Stoffle, Kalle Makinen, Ryan Husband and Christian Sztolcman glided their way to win in the 400 free relay, besting Texas A&M by almost three seconds

For the Aggies, Baylor Nelson tallied multiple top finishes including in the 200 free (1:36.91), 200 back (1:45.01) and 200 IM (1:48.66). Batuhan Filiz made his A&M debut with two big wins in the distance events, swimming 9:10.00 in the 1,000 free and 4:24.62 in the 500 free.

Andres Puente won the 200 breaststroke (1:58.77). Jace Brown led the Aggies in butterfly, finishing first in the 200 with a time of 1:48.17. Allen Bottego grabbed the top spot in the 1-meter with a final score of 373.28.

Women’s meet

The No. 19 Auburn women beat the No. 15 Aggies 172-128.

In the opening 200 medley relay, Auburn’s Daisy Platts, Anastasia Makarova, Claudia Thamm and Lexie Mulvihill outpaced the field to earn the win (1:40.19)

Emily Hetzer won the 500 in 4:52.34.

Kensley Merritt, Ellie Waldrep and Daisy Platts swept the 100 backstroke with Merritt winning in 54.40.

Meghan Lee, Maloney and Platts served up yet another sweep later in the afternoon in the 200 back with Lee clocking a 1:58.08.

Lee, along with Casey Cullen, dialed up huge efforts in the 200 fly for a 1-2 finish with Lee winning in 1:58.83 for Auburn.

Mulvihill brought her domination in 50 free into the new year, collecting another win in the event on Wednesday with a 22.88.

Brynn Curtis won the 200 breast in 2:14.11.

Ownbey rounded out her day in arguably her best event, the 200 IM. The junior hit the wall first by nearly a full second (2:01.45).

For Texas A&M, Chloe Stepanek led the way for the Aggies in the additional freestyle events with top finishes in the 200 (1:47.60) and 100 (49.79), while also earning second place in the 50 (22.98).

Abby Grottle won the 1,000 free (9:56.29). Charlotte Longbottom swam to a first-place time of 1:02.60 in the 100 breast. Swimming the 100 fly to a 53.89, Olivia Theall secured first place. Joslyn Oakley earned the top spot on the 1-meter as she scored 298.80.
