NEW COMMIT: Auburn University has received a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from Winter Springs, Fla. native and high school junior Abby Gibbons.

Primarily a butterflyer, Gibbons does her club swimming with Blue Dolfins and owns the U.S. Open standard in the 100 fly. She most recently competed at Juniors East in December where she finished 13th overall in the 100 fly after placing 21st in that event at Nationals. She recorded a lifetime best at Phillips 66 Nationals this past summer after winning the 50m fly and taking second in the 100m fly at Florida LCM Seniors. Gibbons also competed at NCSAs last March where her highest finish was a sixth-place showing in the 50 fly.

Also competing for Oviedo High School, Gibbons is a six-time Florida 4A State Championship finalist. She placed second in the 100 fly and fourth in the 50 free as a junior and as a freshman after finishing second and third, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season. She has also earned NISCA All-American honors twice in her career.

She told Swimming World:

“I’m super excited to have committed to Auburn. As soon as I walked on campus I knew it was my home. The family between not only the teammates but everyone on campus was amazing to see and experience. Auburn allows me to not only have an advancement in my academic studies but as well an elite collegiate experience.  It’s everything I could’ve asked for in a college and more.”

Her best times include:

  • 50 fly – 24.33
  • 100 fly – 53.45
  • 200 fly – 1:58.73
  • 50 free – 23.24
  • 100 back – 56.55

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Tigers as a member of the class of 2024, Gibbons would’ve scored in the B-final of the 100 fly as well as the C-final of the 200 fly at the 2018 SEC Championships. Gibbons will add some much-needed fly depth to Auburn’s roster as they didn’t have any scorers in the 200 fly at last season’s conference meet.
