NEW COMMIT: The University of St. Thomas has received their first verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from in-state standout Ashley Plantenberg of Eden Prairie, Minn.

Plantenberg marks the Tommies’ first commitment as they become the only program in recent NCAA history to transition directly from DIII to DI. Under head coach Scott Blanchard, St. Thomas has won four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships and will join the Summit League next year.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim D1 at the University of St. Thomas! I am so thankful for my family, coaches, friends, and teammates for all of their support over the years! I can’t wait to be a Tommie! #ROLLTOMS ?”

A talented breaststroker, Plantenberg is currently a senior at Eden Prairie High School. She is a four-time finalist at the Minnesota Class 2A Sectional Championships, having raced the 50 free/100 breast combo as a junior and the 100 free/100 breast during her sophomore season.

Her best times include:

  • 50 breast – 31.11
  • 100 breast – 1:06.28
  • 200 breast – 2:27.26
  • 50 free – 25.02
  • 100 free – 54.48

She also does her club swimming with Aquajets Swim Team and earned five best times at Minnesota Seniors in March where her highest finish was a 15th-place showing in the 100 breast. Last summer, she recorded a trio of new lifetime bests at Minnesota LCM Seniors en route to taking 21st in both the 100m breast and 200m breast.
