As COVID Cases Rise, Pennsylvania Shutting Down School and Youth Sports, Among Other Moves
As part of a directive to try to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf announced on Thursday that all K-12 school sports and youth sports in the commonwealth will be paused for three weeks. The timeframe of the suspension begins on Dec. 12, 2020 and runs through Jan. 4, 2021.
The decision by the Pennsylvania governor effectively shuts down the high school swim season for the next three weeks and affects club swimming, whether under the governance of USA Swimming or at the YMCA level. The shutdown of scholastic swimming marks the second time the sport has been dealt a blow in Pennsylvania, joining the cancellation of last season just as the state-championship meets were starting.
“Today I am announcing additional, temporary COVID-19 protective mitigation measures in the commonwealth,” said Gov. Wolf. “With these measures in place, we hope to accomplish three goals: First, stop the devastating spread of COVID-19 in the commonwealth. Second, keep our hospitals and health care workers from becoming overwhelmed. And third, help Pennsylvanians get through the holiday season – and closer to a widely available vaccine – as safely as possible. This is a bridge to a better future in Pennsylvania.”
In addition to the suspension of school and youth sports, Gov. Wolf announced a number of other measures, including the shutdown of indoor dining and gyms and fitness facilities. Indoor gatherings are not to exceed 10 people and businesses that cater to the public must operate at 50% of their maximum capacity.
“The work we do now to slow the spread of COVID-19 is not only crucial to keeping our fellow Pennsylvanians safe and healthy,” Gov. Wolf said. “It will help all of us get back to normal, and back to all of the things we’ve missed, faster. And it means more Pennsylvanians will be alive to celebrate that brighter future. This year, we show our love for our families and friends by celebrating safely and protecting one another.”

Stand up and fight
Just say NO
Sharon Chocko Gallagher no to what? Wearing a mask? Getting sick? Being responsible?
It’s not transmitted at school and in pools. That’s already established. Politicians are freaking idiots!
And let me guess PA has no scientific evidence that pools are a contributing problem. If you’re not sick stop getting tested and giving these tyrants exactly what they want
Commies
Chris Voigt tots agree. Chlorine kills the baddies.
But seriously little to no Covid cases related to indoor pools?!?!
Don Lindberg it’s a wild time to be alive. Hope all is well wherever you are in the world
Chris Voigt it’s A OK in Spain. Might even be allowed to celebrate Christmas. It’s deemed ok if we can call it “Christmas.”
What he said!
This is seriously ridiculous. How much more can these kids take?
IL did this , started in November til who knows
NJ did this, started 12/5-1/4.
CT did this through 1/19.
Instead of calling it “swim practice”, just show up at the pool, break a window or two, burn something and call it a “protest”. You’ll be allowed to practice then…
