Arizona Wildcats Open 2021 Recruiting With Verbals from Alex McMahon, Connor West

NEW COMMITS: The University of Arizona has officially begun their class of 2025 recruiting and have received verbal commitments from two Coloradans: Alex McMahon of Highlands Ranch and Castle Rock native Connor West.

Both swimmers will suit up for the Wildcats at the start of the 2021-22 season. Arizona finished second in the team standings at the 2020 Pac-12 Championships, marking their highest finish since 1996.

A talented butterflyer, McMahon swims year-round with Aces Swim Club and owns five Junior National standards. He placed 23rd in the 100 fly at Juniors West in December and recorded four lifetime bests at Phoenix Sectionals last year. This past summer, he collected two silvers at Colorado LCM Seniors before going on to take 10th in the 200m IM at Des Moines Futures.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“Thrilled to announce I will be furthering my academic and athletic careers at The University of Arizona. Huge thanks to my family, friends, and coaches that have helped me get to this point.”

A current junior at Heritage High School, McMahon has competed at the Colorado 5A State Championships twice during his career thus far. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American raced to fourth in the 200 free and seventh in the 100 fly during his sophomore season.

His best times include:

  • 100 fly – 48.56
  • 200 fly – 1:50.23
  • 200 IM – 1:50.30
  • 400 IM – 4:06.33

CONNOR WEST

Primarily a backstroker, West has achieved a U.S. Open cut and does his club swimming with Denver Swim Academy. He most recently raced to sixth in the 100 back at the Washington Open following three best times at Juniors West. Last summer, he grabbed gold in the 100m back at Western Zones and competed at Junior Nationals.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I’m so honored to verbally commit to continue my swimming and academic career at the University of Arizona. Thank you so much to my team mates, coaches, and family members who have impacted me along this amazing journey. BEAR DOWN”

Also competing for Highlands Ranch High School, West is a three-time Colorado 5A State Championship finalist. He took 10th in the 200 IM and 11th in the 100 back as a sophomore while finishing 14th in the latter during his rookie campaign.

His best times include:

  • 100 back – 50.45
  • 200 back – 1:48.74
  • 100 free – 48.10
  • 200 IM – 1:55.36
