Arizona Wildcats Defeat UNLV and Denver

LAS VEGAS, Nevada, October 27. THE Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving programs defeated UNLV and Denver on Saturday at UNLV's Buchanan Natatorium.

The women's team defeated UNLV, 188-105 and Denver, 204-86. Meanwhile, the men's squad topped UNLV, 180.5-114.5 and Denver, 187-113.

The Wildcats earned a total of 24 first-place finishes in 32 events on the day — 13 by the women and 11 from the men.

Freshman Bonnie Brandon earned four first-place finishes on the afternoon to pace the Wildcats. She was part of the winning 200 medley relay team while also taking the 100 backstroke (54.43), 200 backstroke (1:58.19) and the 500 freestyle (4:51.61).

Meanwhile, Margo Geer had three first-place finishes. Geer swam the anchor leg of the winning 200 medley relay team and she also took top honors in the 50 freestyle (22.87) and the 100 freestyle (49.83). Chelsey Salli equaled Geer with three victories as well. Salli was part of the 200 medley relay team while also taking top individual honors in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.63) and the 200 IM (2:04.48).

Lauren Smart had a pair of first-place finishes as she won the 100 butterfly (54.59) and was part of the winning 200 medley relay team.

On the men's side, Mitchell Friedemann took top honors in the 100 backstroke (48.83) and was part of the winning team in the 200 medley relay (1:29.09) and the 400 medley relay (3:01.39). Giles Smith also had three first-place finishes as he won the 100 butterfly (48.20) and was part of winning relay teams in the 400 free and 200 medley.

Carl Mickelson won the 100 breastroke (54.99) and the 200 breaststroke (2:01.77). Nimrod Shapira Bar-Or also earned a pair of first-place finishes with victories in the 200 medley relay and the 100 freestyle (45.71). Tommy Gutman won the 50 free (20.67) and was also part of the winning 400 free relay team.

Meanwhile, freshman diver Rafael Quintero was a perfect 2-for-2 on the day as he took top honors in the 1m (322.05) and 3m (375.35) dive.

A pair of Arizona freshmen took top honors in the 200 freestyle as Leticia Lelli (1:50.93) won on the women's side and Kelly Moodie (1:33.54) won the men's 200. Ellyn Baumgardner won the 100 breast (1:01.84) and Ashley Evans won the 200 butterfly (2:03.64).

Both the men's and women's teams return to action on Friday, Nov. 9 when the Cats travel to Los Angeles for a dual meet against USC. The meet is set for a 2 p.m. start.
