COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, September 24. TODAY, USA Swimming announced the 2013-14 Arena Grand Prix Series schedule as well as some enhancements to its prizes from last year’s infusion of cash by title sponsor Arena.

Arena will provide $150,000 in prize money for podium placers at the six stops of the 2013-2014 circuit this year. Similar to last year, $500 will be awarded for first place, $300 for second and $100 for third. Additionally, another USA Swimming sponsor will be providing a nice grand prize for the overall winners as BMW will provide a one-year lease of a BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Series vehicle to the highest-scoring eligible male and female this year. So, those pro swimmers that aren’t in college definitely had a reason to battle for the top spot.

“Thanks in large part to Arena’s support, we saw the Arena Grand Prix Series taken to new heights last season, and we reaped the benefits of this elevated competition by winning the medal count at the 2013 FINA World Championships,” said Frank Busch, USA Swimming’s National Team Director. “This kind of prize money will again attract the nation’s top swimmers to the Arena Grand Prix Series meets, and we look forward to another exciting Series in 2013-14.”

The scoring system for the grand prizes is similar to last year. Individuals will claims five points for first, three points for second and one point for third in Olympic events during the series to determine the circuit winners. Last year, Missy Franklin and Ryan Lochte took home the top honors with Franklin turning down prize money to remain NCAA eligible.
