Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil topped the field to win the women’s 25K open water title at the 2015 FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia.

Cunha clocked a time of 5:13:47.3 for the victory.  That’s her second win ever in the event, matching her triumph in 2011. That made her just the fourth woman to ever win the event more than once in a career. Edith van Dijk of The Netherlands holds the record with four wins, while Germany’s Angela Maurer and Britta Kamrau-Corestein both also have two wins.

That’s also Cunha’s seventh overall medal in open water swimming at a World Championships, beating Poliana Okimoto (six) for the most by a South American swimmer by either gender.

Hungary’s Anna Olasz raced her way to silver in 5:14:13.4.  With the medal, she’s just the third swimmer from Hungary to earn an individual open water medal.  Rita Kovacs took silver in the women’s 25K in 1994, while Csaba Gercsak claimed bronze in the men’s 25K in 2011.

Veteran Maurer added to her long legacy with a bronze-medal time of 5:15:07.6.

That’s her record ninth medal in the women’s 25K overall, beating van Dijk’s previous mark of eight. Maurer also now stands second all time for total career open water medals with 13.

Maurer won her first open water medal with a bronze in the women’s 25K back in 2000.  Cunha (8) and Olasz (7) hadn’t even become teenagers yet at that time.

As for the Americans, Emily Brunemann took eighth in 5:19:51.2, while Ashley Twichell placed ninth in 5:20:20.8.
