Saturday afternoon Williams College and Amherst College each walked out of Samuelson-Muir pool with a victory.

The number six Williams College women beat the 17th ranked Amherst College women 184 to 110. The men’s meet was much closer, with the number 14 Amherst men edging the number 19 Ephs 123 to 114.

Men

The men’s meet came down to the final relay. And not just the final relay, but the final strokes, as Amherst out touched Williams by a mere .21 to win the dual meet.

The Mammoths started the meet with a significant relay victory, as Craig Smith, Sean Mebust, Jack Koravos, and Scott Romeyn combined for a 3:22.69.

Williams’ Andrew Trunsky posted a 9:44.54 to win the 1000 for the Ephs. His teammate Jamie Lovette led another one-two finish for Williams with his 1:40.56 200 freestyle.

Freshman Scott Romeyn and junior Jack Koravos fired back for Amherst, taking the top two spots in the 50 free in 20.99 and 21.21.

Williams went one-two-three in the 200 IM as Sean Tan got to the wall in 1:54.43, followed by Jackson Karofsky (1:55.88) and Paul Leclerc (1:56.44). The home team continued to dominate with Tan and Lucca Delcompare tying for first in the 200 fly (1:52.91), and teammate David Pearcy picking up third place points (1:54.57).

Lovette also returned to win the 100 free in 46.77, .01 ahead of teammate Curtis Maher.

Williams’ lack of male divers was huge for Amherst, as they racked up first, second, and third place points on both boards.

Amherst finally picked up another swimming victory with a 1:51.97 200 backstroke from Smith.

Karofsky and Trunsky were first and second for Williams in the 500 free in 4:40.66 and 4:43.97, respectively.

Mebust, the leader of arguably the deepest breaststroke group in the NESCAC won the 200 breast in 2:05.03 ahead of teammates Josh Chen (2:10.59) and Gary Sun (2:10.65).

With the meet on the line, Tristan So led Amherst off three tenths ahead of William Zhang in the 400 freestyle relay. Jack Koravos outsplit Williams’ second leg Aaron Stanton to give the Mammoths a half second lead at the halfway mark. Lovette brought the margin down to just two tenths on the third leg. Amherst’s Eric Wong closed in 45.94, just .01 faster than Maher’s 45.95 anchor split to give Amherst the relay victory, 3:05.05 to 3:05.26.

Women

The Williams women started the meet off hot, strong all around as the 200 medley relay of Veronica Wolff, Caroline White, Maia Hare, and Laura Westphal turned in a time of 1:46.61, a second and a half ahead of Amherst’s 1:48.32.

The Ephs rolled through the 1000, taking the top four spots led by sophomore Gwyneth Maloy in 10:42.33. Her classmate Westphal led a one-two finish in the 200 free with her 1:53.16.

Freshman backstroker Abby Matheny kept things rolling for Williams in the 100 back, touching out Amherst’s Bridgitte Kwong 59.50 to 59.55.

Matheny also won the 200 backstroke in a quick 2:04.61, just faster than Kwong’s 2:04.98. Williams got another win from a first year as Anna Peterson led a 100 butterfly sweep in 57.79. Hare (58.45) and Wolff (58.62) followed.

White edged the Mammoth’s Nina Fitzgerald 1:05.22 to 1:05.38 to win the 100 breaststroke. She made it a double victory, coming back with a 2:21.68 200 breaststroke. Fitzgerald was second in 2:24.87.

All around star Molly Craig sped to a 2:05.04 200 fly to win that event while teammate Wolff was runner up in 2:06.21. Craig was runner up in the 500 free (5:07.44) behind teammate Westphal (5:04.76). Craig added a 200 IM victory, getting to the wall in 2:07.42 while Kwong picked up her third runner up finish of the day in 2:09.94.

Amherst picked up a victory in the 50 free when Ingrid Shu got to the wall in 24.27. She was followed by four Ephs. Natalie Rumpelt continued the sprinting success for the Mammoths with a winning 52.61 in the 100 free.

Lindsey Ruderman put together two wins for Amherst, taking one meter diving with a score of 303.91 and three meter with 334.50 points.

After all four legs of their B and C relay outsplit one leg of the A, Williams had a tough time keeping up with Amherst in the final 4×100 freestyle relay. Livia Domenig, Dorit Song, Shu, and Rumpelt clocked a 3:34.81 to win the final race for the Mammoths while Williams was second in 3:37.02.

Why do they swim that Old School event lineup? Is this the only dual meet in America where that list of events is used?

Scott Wilson I’ve only swam in America my whole life. Can you elaborate on this possibly?
