Alex Shackell and Summer McIntosh Continue to Put On a Show At Winter Juniors-East

Perhaps one day, Alex Shackell and Summer McIntosh will clash on the international stage. At least for now, we get the chance to watch the teenagers duel in a smaller setting, albeit by delivering superb performances.

On the third night of the Winter Juniors Championships-East, Shackell and McIntosh engaged in a showdown in the 100-yard butterfly, with Shackell bolting to an early advantage and holding off her Canadian foe to prevail in 51.00. McIntosh, who was cutting into Shackell’s edge down the stretch, touched for second place in 51.10.

It has been an impressive meet for Shackell, the latest star produced by the esteemed Carmel Swim Club. On Thursday night, she powered to a pair of titles, claiming victory in the 200 individual medley and 50 freestyle. Now, the 100 fly crown is in her possession, and it required knocking off one of the world’s premier all-around performers in the 16-year-old McIntosh.

Shackell went out in 23.57, compared to the 23.84 split of McIntosh. Over the closing 50 yards, McIntosh narrowed her deficit, but Shackell maintained her lead. Another 16-year-old, Shackell was just off her morning performance of 50.97, an effort that made her the No. 2 performer in the event in the 15-16 age group.

Following her silver medal in the 100 butterfly, McIntosh roared to victory in the 200 freestyle, posting the fastest time ever recorded by a 16-year-old. Because McIntosh is Canadian, the mark will not be recognized as an NAG by USA Swimming, but it is worth noting that McIntosh’s time was more than a second faster than the 1:42.03 of Katie Ledecky that sits as the NAG mark for the age group.

Shackell and McIntosh were front and center in the 200 freestyle relay at the end of the session, too. With Shackell leading off in 22.00, Carmel (1:30.08) captured the title in the event. Shackell was joined on the winning relay by Berit Berglund, Molly Sweeney and Meghan Christman.
