Shackell Siblings Shine At Winter Juniors-East; Combine For Trio Of Solo Titles

From excelling for Carmel Swim Club to Carmel High to Team USA, the Shackell siblings – Alex and Aaron – have routinely shared the aquatic spotlight. So, it was fitting that each member of the family raced to gold during the Winter Juniors-East Championships on Thursday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.

After Aaron Shackell fought to the wall for a victory in the 500-yard freestyle, Alex Shackell registered a dominant triumph in the 200 individual medley and bested the field in the 50 freestyle. The efforts were the latest in a long line of championship-caliber performances produced by members of the Carmel Swim Club.

A Cal recruit and member of the United States National Junior Team, Aaron Shackell claimed the first of his family’s crowns when he edged out Tristan DenBrok at the finish of the 500 freestyle. Trailing DenBrok heading into the final 50 yards, Shackell pulled ahead of the competition over the last two laps and prevailed in 4:16.49, with DenBrok going 4:16.62 for the silver medal. Henry McFadden was also in the mix at the wall, going 4:16.99.

It was then Alex Shackell’s turn to shine, and she took advantage of the opportunity. The top seed after prelims, Shackell backed up her Lane Four assignment with a winning mark of 1:54.54. That performance handed the 16-year-old a two-second cushion over Carmel teammate Molly Sweeney (1:56.63) and wasn’t far off the 15-16 NAG of Olympic medalist Alex Walsh, who went 1:54.04 during the 2017 season.

The younger Shackell added another win in the final individual event of the night, as her effort of 21.73 captured the gold medal in the 50 freestyle. Shackell got to the wall ahead of Erika Pelaez, who dazzled with her own sub-22 outing, a 21.91 mark. On the boys’ side, Scotty Buff touched in 19.46 for the win.

In relay action, Carmel’s squad of Berit Berglund, Sweeney, Shackell and Meghan Christman posted a time of 3:33.48 to beat the Sarasota Sharks by exactly two seconds in the girls’ 400 medley relay. For the boys, gold went to the TAC Titans’ unit of Will Thompson, Grayson Nye, Colin Whelehan and Jerry Fox in 3:13.12.
