Alex Murphy became the fourth member of Swim Ireland’s team for this summer’s world championships with a 27.56 to win the 50 breaststroke at the Irish Open. The 19-year-old from the University College Dublin team spoke with Swimming World’s Jeff Commings about his qualifying swim saying it was not a goal coming into the meet, but became one after he swam fast in prelims.

Murphy talked about growing up and racing the current 50 breast national record holder, Barry Murphy, and the realization that he’s now Ireland’s top breaststroker. He spoke of training with his team as the only breaststroker, and how he’s already looking ahead to pursuing a spot on Ireland’s Olympic team.
