Alaska State 50 Free Champion Katy McCarter Signs NLI to New Mexico
NEW COMMIT: The University of New Mexico has received a new commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Katy McCarter of Fairbanks, Alaska.
She will join Layni Andrle, Kailey Turner, Taylor Murphy and Caitlin Beery as a member of the Lobos’ class of 2025.
She told Swimming World:
“Swimming for college used to be a dream. I wouldn’t have even imagined swimming for a division one swim team if it weren’t for my support group of coaches, family and friends. Now look at me, I’ve signed for the university New Mexico and I can’t wait to see what I can bring to the team. Go lobos! The University of New Mexico is a great location and has an amazing health department, which I plan to take advantage of to study occupational therapy. The next four years are going to be an amazing adventure.”
McCarter does her club swimming with Midnight Sun Swim Team and won the 50 free with five additional top-5 finishes at Alaska Seniors in January. In Summer 2019, she swam away with two gold and two silver medals at Alaska LCM Seniors.
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 24.14
- 100 free – 52.70
- 200 free – 1:55.86
- 100 back – 1:00.01
- 200 back – 2:07.59
Also competing for Lathrop High School, McCarter is a six-time Alaska State Championship finalist. She won the 50 free and was the runner-up in the 100 free as a junior while taking third and second, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.
Under head coach Keegan Ingelido, New Mexico finished eighth overall in the team standings at the 2020 Mountain West Championships.
