Akron Zips Past Duquesne in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, October 19.JUNIORS Catherine Carr and Kendra Colby each won two events as the University of Akron swimming and diving team defeated Duquesne, 158-104, in its first dual meet of the season Friday evening at Towers Pool. The Zips won eight of the 14 events and swept the top three spots in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events.

Colby led sweeps in the 100 breast and 200 breast with wins in 1:07.27 and 2:27.44, respectively. In the 100 breast, freshman Hannah Raspopovich followed in second and sophomore Amanda Lawson was third. Lawson was also second in the 200 breast and senior Jessica Breymier touched the wall third.

Carr notched wins in the 100-yard butterfly (57.91) and 200-yard individual medley (2:10.05). Freshman Erin Seiler was third in the 100 fly and senior Kelsea Cross finished in third place in the 200 IM for the Zips. Carr also tallied a runner-up showing in the 200 fly.

Cross led UA to a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke as she won in 58.92 and was followed closely by sophomore Kelsey Ferrante (59.06). Ferrante came back to win the 200 back with a clocking of 2:06.57, while Cross was second.

Senior Becca Zimmer picked up a win in the 200 free (1:55.89), while classmate Becca Emerich was third. Zimmer was also second in the 500 free and Emerich third.

In the 50 free, sophomore Taylor Hart took second and Hannah Raspopovich was third. Freshman Ashley Niznik picked up a third place in the 100 free and freshman Ashley Drazkowski was runner-up in the 1000 free.

The Zips took the top two spots in the 200-yard medley relay as the 'A' squad of Cross, Colby, Seiler and Hart won in 1:49.40. Akron's 'B' relay of Ferrante, Hannah Raspopovich, senior Rachel Szymkowiak and Niznik was second in 1:51.22. Akron also won the 400 free relay as Ferrante, Colby, Niznik and Carr came in with a time of 3:37.71.

Akron will next compete in its home opener at Ocasek Natatorium next Saturday, Oct. 27 against Mid-American Conference rival Ball State. The meet begins at 1:00 p.m.
