A Look At the NISCA All-America Lists for 2021-22 (Link Included)

NISCA has released its swimming and diving All-America lists for the 2021-22 to recognize the top 100 performers in each event from high school competitions only. The high school swimming season spans the entire school year as most states compete in swimming during the winter while several states swim in the fall and a few in the spring.

This year’s high school season featured national records in four events, and Cardinal Gibbons senior Claire Curzan was the standout as she lowered the American record in the 100-yard butterfly and then took down the high school mark in the 100 backstroke shortly thereafter. Curzan’s 100 fly national mark was broken one month later at the NCAA Championships, but she retained the high school mark. Curzan used high school competition as a springboard into a great summer as she qualified for the World Championships team in four events and ended up winning bronze in the 100-meter back along with four relay medals in Budapest.

Carmel’s boys lowered the national high school record in the 200 medley relay with Sean Sullivan, Ryan Malicki, Aaron Shackell and Chris Holmes finishing in 1:26.88, almost a second quicker than Baylor’s 2014 mark of 1:27.74.

Finally, the Santa Margarita Catholic High School team of Mackenzie Hodges, Teia Salvino, Teagan O’Dell and Justina Kozan broke the national record in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:14.80. That knocked a half-second off a mark set by the legendary 2014 Carmel relay that included future collegiate standouts Veronica Burchill, Claire Adams and Amy Bilquist.

These record-breaking swimmers and relay teams highlight the list of No. 1 performers in the nation, and also ranked first here is 100-meter breaststroke Olympic gold medalist Lydia Jacoby, whose time of 59.40 during her senior season for Seward High School led the nation in the 100-yard breast. In boys’ competition, the only swimmer with two No. 1 times was Quintin McCarty, a senior at Discovery Canyon High School in Colorado Springs. McCarty led the way in the 50 and 100 free.
