Pac-12 Weekly Recap: Cal Men, Women Win Duals

The Cal men’s swim team defeated Pacific 158.5-100.5 to open it season.

With half the team headed to Salt Lake City for a Saturday dual against Utah, Cal took the other half of the roster to Pacific. Junior Ken Takahashi got the Bears started when it came to race wins, posting a time of 9:34.31 to take the 1,000-yard freestyle.

Jack Xie kept the Bears in the win column with a victory in the 200 free, leading a 1-2-3 Cal finish with a time of 1:41.24. Andy Song swam to a time of 50.11 to win the 100 back, Matt Whittle posted a time of 56.56 to win the 100 breast and Ryan Kao touched first in 1:49.22 for a victory in the 200 fly.

Cal women top Utah

In its first dual meet of the season, second-ranked Cal cruised past Utah, 186-114, Monday with a trio of swimmers winning two individual events each – freshman Ali Harrison, junior Amy Bilquist and senior Noemie Thomas.

Harrison earned wins in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke, while Bilquist swept the 100 and 200 freestyle, and Thomas took first in the 100 and 200 butterfly. In addition to Harrison, other freshmen who prevailed were Briana Thai on the 1-meter springboard, Sophie Krivokapic-Zhou in the 200 back and Sarah Darcel in the 200 IM.

Sophomore Maddie Murphy won the 50 free and Alexa Cacao triumphed on the 3-meter board to round out the individual victors. The foursome of Bilquist, Harrison, Thomas and Valerie Hull also touched first in the opening 200 medley relay.

In her first collegiate meet, Sara McClendon won the 1000 free touching in at 10:13.16 and the 500 free with a time of 5:00.36.

Another freshman, Emma Broome was able to get a victory for the Utes in the 100 back, finishing with a time of 56.36.

Utah women had some wins…came in 1 and 2 in 1000 free, 1st in 500 free and 100 back, and 1st in 400 free relay.
