Cody Miller, previous American record holder and Rio bronze medalist in the men’s 100 breaststroke, took second in the event this evening at the 2017 U.S. National Championships in Indiana. His runner-up time of 59.11 qualifies him for the World Champs team headed to Budapest later this summer, behind teammate Kevin Cordes, who broke Miller’s American record this evening.
Miller’s decision to opt out of the 200 breaststroke this weekend paid off, as it allowed him to focus more on the shorter events at which he excels. In fact, his time of 59.11 is quicker than what qualified him for the Rio Olympics last summer, which is promising looking forward to Worlds.
Miller discusses the difficulty of getting back in the pool after his Olympic success, and credits his teammates and family for helping him find his motivation and love for the sport again. He singles out Lilly King as an important part of his journey, describing her as a little sister to him and how her fiery energy keeps the team excited and working hard.
