Division II Weekly Meet Recap: Top Schools Take On Division I Opponents

In two of the biggest match-ups this week, Grand Valley State and Drury both took on Division I schools in their first dual meets of the year, Read below to see the final scores and recaps of each meet!

Grand Valley State vs. Wisconsin Milwaukee

Grand Valley State split with Division I Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday, with the Laker men prevailing 152-92 and the Laker women falling 92-151 at home. That is the same final outcome for both teams as last year.

The Laker men started the meet off with a win in the 200 medley relay (1:34.72) of Harry Sholaman, Marius Mikalauskas, Liam Little, and JD Ham, while Danny Abbott took both the 50 free (21.51) and 100 free (46.97). The men also closed with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:09.88) and had wins in the 1,000 free, 200 breaststroke, and 200 backstroke.

While the Laker women fell to UW-Milwaukee, the Laker women were dominant in the distance freestyle. Melina Goebel led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,000 freestyle (10:32.55), and they also went 2-3-4 in the 500 freestyle. 2016 NCAA champion in the 1,650 Leonie Van Noort added a win in the 200 free (1:54.19) for good measure. Goebel also added a second win to shortly after the 1,000 in the 200 butterfly (2:10.64). Grand Valley State will take on Lewis at home on october 21st.

Drury vs. Arkansas (Women Only)

The visiting Drury women fell to Division I Arkansas, 128-77, in their first dual meet of the season. While they didn’t come out on top in the final score, the Drury women did come out on top in several events. That included some back-to-back wins throughout the meet. Senior Wen Xu took both the 50 free (23.44) and 100 free (51.65), while Bailee Nunn pulled off a hat trick, winning the 200 IM (2:01.84), 100 butterfly (54.19), and 100 breaststroke (1:02.37). The Drury men and women will take on the University of Alaska-Fairbanks next weekend on October 21st.
