2023 NCAA Division II Championships: Jackson Lustig Takes Down National Record as Nova Southeastern, Indy Remain on Top

On the fourth of five days of the NCAA Division II Championships, the Nova Southeastern women extended their lead in the team competition to 90.5 points as Emily Trieschmann picked up her second win of the meet in the 500 freestyle while Savanna Best and Claire Gass picked up a 1-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke. Meanwhile, the men’s meet tightened up at the top as Drury reduced Indy’s lead from 57 points to just 35.5 to make things interesting heading into the final day of the meet.

The top performance of Friday evening’s finals came from Jackson Lustig, a McKendree sophomore who became the first swimmer in Division II history to break 1:41 in the 200 butterfly.

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Nova Southeastern’s Emily Trieschmann, already a dominant winner and NCAA-record-setter in the 1000 free, produced a dominant win in the 500-yard event, her time of 4:45.56 beating the field by more than four-and-a-half seconds. With Nova having built a comfortable lead in the team competition and winning all three women’s relays so far, Trieschmann’s victory was the fourth individual win for her team after her own win Wednesday evening plus May Lowy’s 400 IM win and Emilia Ronningdal’s wins in both the 200 IM and 200 free.

Wayne State’s Jordan Fox, already the runnerup in the 1000 free, took second in 4:50.13 while Azusa Pacific’s Montana White grabbed third in 4:51.54. West Chester’s Mikayla Niness took fourth (4:52.88) after a final 50 burst helped her catch Colorado Mesa’s Katerina Matoskova (fifth, 4:53.06).

Men’s 500 Freestyle

Tampa’s Hayden Curley was swimming in an outside lane in the final after he qualified seventh in prelims, but he got the better of the field in the final, taking over the lead from Indy’s Cedric Buessing, already the winner of the 1000 free, at the 200-yard mark. Curley then built up a two-second lead, which he needed to hold off a blistering 24.75 final split from Buessing.

Curley touched in 4:18.66, about two-thirds of a second clear of Buessing. Oklahoma Christian’s Victor Rosado finished just behind Buessing for third in 4:19.45, while the next-fastest swimmer, Grand Valley’s Eric Hieber, was well back in 4:21.98.

The first men’s national record of the meet went to McKendree’s Jackson Lustig, who already placed third in the 100 fly earlier in the meet. This time, though, Lustig dominated the race from start to finish. In prelims, he notched a mark of 1:42.64 that was two seconds faster than any other swimmer recorded Friday, and in the final, he touched in 1:40.75 to eclipse the Division II national record of 1:41.19 that Queens’ Alex Kunert set in 2019.

Drury’s Andrew Rodriguez took second in 1:45.08, just ahead of Colorado Mesa’s Dejan Urbanek (1:45.30). Drury’s Dominik Karacic swama time of 1:45.14 in prelims for the third-fastest qualifying time, and he sat in second place in the final, but Karacic faded badly on the last 50, andhe tied with teammate Alejandro Villarejo for fourth (1:46.53).
