2022 Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 1: Arizona State Breaks Meet Record in 800 Free Relay

The 2022 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming Championships kicked off from Federal Way, Washington with two relays.

The 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay were on tap for the opening session, though diving happened alongside the women’s meet and has been scored.

Diving gave Stanford the early lead over Utah in the meet with three diving events already scored. Those points could be big as Stanford is chasing Cal on paper for the team title.

Stanford won the opening 200 medley relay as well to built its lead but Arizona State stole the show with a Pac-12 meet record in the 800 free relay.

Pac-12 Men’s 200 Medley Relay

The Stanford Cardinal, already leading after diving, took a huge step and kept the lead after the first swimming event, winning the 200 medley relay.

Leon MacAlister, Ron Polonsky, Andrei Minakov and Jonny Affeld won the race in 1:22.74, an NCAA automatic qualifier. The quartet dropped a second from its seed time.

Arizona State’s Jack Dolan, John Heaphy, Cody Bybee and Grant House took second in 1:22.95, also an “A” cut.

Taking third in an “A” cut was Cal’s Daniel Carr, Liam Bell, Dare Rose and Bjorn Seeliger (1:23.26).

Pac-12 Men’s 800 Freestyle

Arizona State claimed victory in the 800 freestyle relay. Grant House led off in a 1:30.54 for the Sun Devils, an effort among the fastest in history. Carter Swift (1:33.61), Julian Hill (1:32.20) and Leon Marchand (1:31.16) followed and ASU won in 6:07.51.

The Sun Devils broke the Pac-12 meet record of 6:10.94 set by Cal in 2019 and were just two tenths off of the overall conference record.

Stanford’s Luke Maurer, Leon MacAlister, Ron Polonsky and Preston Force took second in 6:08.73.

Cal’s Robin Hanson, Gabriel Jett, Trenton Julian and Destin Lasco took third in 6:09.98.
