The 2021 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships continued with the second preliminary session of the meet on Friday.

Friday’s prelim events are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and 3-meter diving. The relays are all timed finals and will take place during the finals session.

Virginia leads the meet after winning the 800 free relay on opening night of the NCAA Championships, then claiming all three individual titles on Day 2, while also taking runner-up in both relays. The Cavaliers have plenty of fire power in today’s events as well.

NCAA Championships: Women’s 100 Breaststroke

This event has been completely dominated by Indiana’s Lilly King in recent years. She is the NCAA and American record holder at 55.73 and swept the titles the past four championships. It is an event that has seen several repeat winners with Texas A&M’s Breeja Larson winning three from 2012-14, Rebecca Soni and Jessica Hardy each winning two, Stanford’s Tara Kirk sweeping all four from 2001-04 and Georgia’s Kristy Kowal winning three from 1998-2000. Repeat titles also happened with Beata Kaszuba, Stephanie Zunich and Tracey McFarlane of Texas, who actually won three in a four-year span from 1985-88. Georgia’s Zoie Hartman (57.40) and NC State’s Sophie Hansson (57.45) are in the top seven performers all time coming into the meet.

NC State’s Sophie Hansson became the first non-Virginia swimmer of the day to earn a top seed in an individual event.

Hansson, a junior, put together an extremely strong 100 breaststroke to take the top seed in 57.67.

She was the only swimmer under 58 seconds.

Tennessee freshman Mona McSharry took the second seed in 58.16, followed by Ohio State sophomore Hannah Bach (58.21) and USC freshman Kaitlyn Dobler (58.22).

Virginia had one in the top eight with junior Alexis Wenger taking the fifth seed in 58.33, ahead of Georgia sophomore Zoie Hartman (58.49).

Northwestern senior Sophie Angus and NC State junior Andrea Podmanikova tied for the seventh seed at 58.59.
