2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Championships: Drew Kibler leads 200 Free Texas Surge

The 2021 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship continued Friday with preliminaries on Day 3 of the meet.
The events scheduled are the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke.
Cal has the lead heading into the day, but a late surge from Texas on Thursday night has the meet extremely close with every swim counting for both teams.

NCAA Championships: 200 Free
Harvard’s Dean Farris holds the NCAA and American record in 1:29.15, set in 2019. Florida’s Kieran Smith has the second-fastest time at 1:29.48, set at this year’s SEC Championships. Three-time champion Townley Haas of Texas is third at 1:29.50. … Cal’s Andrew Seliskar won in 2019, after Haas won three in a row. … Matt Biondi, Gustavo Borges, Simon Burnett, Ryk Neethling and Haas each have won three. … USC and Texas each won eight as a team, while Arizona has seven.
Texas junior Drew Kibler took the top seed in the 200 free, touching the wall in 1:30.87.
Florida junior Kieran Smith took the second seed in 1:31.69, just ahead of Cal senior Trenton Julian (1:31.95), in what looks poised to be an incredibly close three-way race for the title.
Texas sophomore Peter Larson took the fourth seed in 1:32.53, followed by USC junior Alexei Sancov (1:32.55), LSU sophomore Brooks Curry (1:32.55), Ohio State senior Paul DeLakis (1:32.59) and Texas senior Jake Sannem (1:32.98).
The Longhorns have three in the finals in the event and one more in the consolation finals. The 200 free is always a huge event for Texas and this year has proved to be the same as the Longhorns look to keep pace with Cal, which has one in the finals in this event. It should be a fast finish in this race.
