Greensboro, Day Two Heats

Fresh off an American record last night in the 200 medley relay, Virginia came to the pool ready to go on Thursday morning in Greensboro with cruising swims from Paige Madden and Kate Douglass in the 500 and 200 IM, respectively.

However, NC State had the best morning with eight A-finalists qualified for finals tonight, with 50 free top seed Kylee Alons leading a total of three Wolfpack swimmers in that A-Final. Virginia qualified seven to tonight’s A-Finals with Louisville qualifying three.

The ups, mids, downs report is below. Teams are in order of the team scores after last night.

Virginia’s Paige Madden cruised to a 4:38.58 in the heats to lead the way ahead of NC State’s Kate Moore (4:43.33) and Virginia Tech’s Reka Gyorgy (4:44.14). The race is expected to be much quicker tonight in finals as Madden had the top time in the nation this season with her 4:33 at mid-season. It may be a stretch, but the meet record stands at 4:30.74 set by Virginia’s Leah Smith in 2016.

Each team in the final advanced two to the A-Final with Virginia, NC State, Notre Dame and Virginia Tech each getting two representatives.

200 IM

Virginia’s Kate Douglass also cruised in the 200 IM heats with a 1:52.71 as she has a shot to break the American record of 1:50.67 set by Ella Eastin at the 2018 NCAAs. Her best time this season is a 1:50.92 and she very well may be the first woman to break 1:50 in the event, whether that happens today at the ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships or in four weeks at NCAAs at this same pool in Greensboro. Her teammate Alex Walsh is the second seed at 1:54.41 as the Cavaliers also advanced Ella Nelson (1:56.07) and Abby Harter (1:57.82) to the championship final to make up half the pool.

NC State placed Julia Poole (1:56.01), Emma Muzzy (1:56.17) and Abby Arens (1:57.83) in the A-Final as Louisville’s Abby Hay (1:56.60) will complete the final in an all-red shade heat.

50 Free

NC State qualified three to the A-Final in the 50 free led by Kylee Alons (21.70) and Katharine Berkoff (22.06) as Heather Maccausland (22.36) will also swim out in lane seven in tonight’s final at the ACC Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships. Virginia only qualified Lexi Cuomo (22.46) to the A-Final out in lane eight as the 200 free relay may very well go NC State’s way in tonight’s finals. However, with the addition of Kate Douglass to Virginia’s line-up, the Cavaliers will certainly be a force in that relay after her 20.6 split on the end of the medley relay last night.

Louisville advanced two to the final with Gabi Albiero (22.13) and former juniors champ Christiana Regenauer (22.34). Florida State’s Rebecca Moynihan will also swim in the final out in lane 1.
