Conference season is here! 200 Medley Relay

  • Conference record: 1:33.91, Virginia
  • Meet record: 1:34.27, Virginia
  • Nation’s top time: 1:34.35, Virginia

The Virginia Cavaliers wasted no time in getting the night off to a fast start with a 1:32.93 in the 200 medley relay to break the American and NCAA record that stood since 2018 at 1:33.11 that Stanford set on its way to winning all five relays at NCAAs three years ago. The team of Caroline Gmelich, Alexis Wenger, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass swam on the record setting relay with NC State coming in second at 1:33.52.

  • Virginia’s splits:
    • Gmelich – 23.70
    • Wenger – 26.03
    • Cuomo – 22.58
    • Douglass – 20.62
  • Stanford’s old record splits:
    • Howe – 23.54
    • Williams – 26.50
    • Hu – 22.62
    • Manuel – 20.45

NC State was second with the team of Katharine Berkoff (23.37), Sophie Hansson (26.31), Sirena Rowe (23.02) and Kylee Alons (20.82) as they also got close to the existing NCAA record and were ahead of the Cavaliers through 125 yards. Due to Hansson and Rowe holding dual citizenship with Sweden and Colombia they were not eligible for the American record, but they could push for an NCAA record later in the week in the 400 medley relay.

Berkoff’s time was right on the fastest 50 back ever of Maggie MacNeil set last year at 23.05.

Louisville finished in third at 1:36.15 and Florida State was fourth at 1:36.97.

Due to social distancing protocols, the relays were swum in three heats of four teams with a lane separating each of them.
