2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 4 Prelims: Cal Closes in on Title

The 2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships opened its final day with Saturday’s prelims session from Federal Way, Washington.

Cal trailed heading into Day 3, but put together a dominant performance to lead by more than 150 points heading into the final day.

Hugo Gonzalez and Ryan Hoffer started the Golden Bears off with wins on Friday. But it was Reece Whitley who had the big swim of the night, going 50.85 in the 100 breaststroke as Dave Durden‘s Golden Bears won all but one event on the night went from second place to a commanding lead.

Cal now leads the meet with 576 points. Arizona State is second with 414, followed by Arizona (387), Stanford (385.5), Utah (296) and USC (279.5).

The Golden Bears put 12 in the finals Saturday night as they close in on the Pac-12 title.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Backstroke

Cal’s Daniel Carr led a 1-2-3 seeded finish for the Golden Bears top open the final day of the meet.

The junior took the top seed in 1:39.65, finishing ahead of fellow junior Bryce Mefford (1:40.74) and sophomore Hugo Gonzalez (1:40.78).

Arizona’s Thomas Anderson took the fourth seed in 1:41.74, ahead of Arizona State’s Zachary Poti (1:41.79), who tied with Cal’s Colby Mefford (1:41.79).

Cal’s Andy Xianyang Song took the seventh seed in 1:41.91, ahead of Stanford’s Johannes Calloni (1:41.98).

Cal finished with five in the finals.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 100 Free

Arizona State junior Carter Swift enjoyed a swift morning swim to take the top seed in the 100 free, finishing in 42.04.

Cal’s Ryan Hoffer took the second seed in 42.13, setting up an exciting final.

Arizona’s Marin Ercegovich took the third spot in 42.37, just ahead of Cal’s Michael Jensen (42.50) and Arizona State’s Cody Bybee (42.64).

Utah’s Liam O’Haimhirgin tied with Bybee for the fifth seed at 42.64, while Arizona State’s Jack Dolan (42.71) and Evan Carlson (42.77) rounded out the top eight.

Pawel Sendyk of Cal ended up with the ninth seed in 42.84.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Breaststroke

After a huge win in the 100 breaststroke, Cal’s Reece Whitley aimed for the breaststroke sweep. He took the top seed in the 200 breast in 1:52.52.

A Stanford trio followed as Daniel Roy (1:53.76), Brennan Pastorek (1:53.80) and Hank Poppe (1:53.99) took the 2-3-4 seeds.

Cal’s Karl Arvidsson took the fifth seed in 1:54.14 ahead of teammate Jason Louser (1:54.20).

Arizona’s Sam Iida took the seventh seed in 1:54.72, ahead of Stanford’s Jonathan Cook (1:56.25).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Butterfly

Cal took the top two spots in the 200 butterfly with just two hundredths of a second between them.

Junior Trenton Julian took the top seed in 1:41.56, while senior Zheng Quah was second in 1:41.58.

They were nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Arizona took the next four spots with Brooks Fail (1:43.32), Brooks Taner (1:43.62), Etay Gurevich (1:43.71) and Brendan Meyer (1:43.94) going 3-4-5-6.

Stanford’s Alex Liang took the seventh seed in 1:44.19, followed by Arizona State’s Alexander Colson (1:44.25).
