2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 4: Cal Three-peats as Champs

The 2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships opened its final night with Saturday’s finals session from Federal Way, Washington.

Cal had a strong fourth day and lead by more than 150 points heading into the final day, building a lead too big to catch, claiming another Pac-12 title by nearly 300 points. It was the third championship in a row for Cal.

Dave Durden‘s Golden Bears put 12 in the finals Saturday night to roll to victory. Ryan Hoffer won his third event of the meet, taking the title in the 100 free on Saturday.

It also marks the final Pac-12 Championship meet day for USC coach Dave Salo, who is stepping down after the season.

Scholar Athlete

USC senior Henry Fusaro was named the Pac-12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the 2019-20 season, the Conference office announced on Saturday. The award, which is presented in each of the 24 sports the Pac-12 sponsors, was established to honor collegiate student-athletes who are standouts both academically and in their sports discipline.

Fusaro boasts a 3.71 GPA and is double majoring in Law, History and Culture & Philosophy, Politics, and Law. He is a two-time College Swimming & Diving Coaches Associate (CSCAA) Scholar-All-American and a Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team honoree (2018).

The Scottsdale, Ariz., native is a five-time NCAA Zone E Championships finalist and a two-time NCAA All-American honorable mention selection. The 2017 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year owns a Pac-12 title in the 3-meter (2018) and is a two-time Pac-12 spring-board runner-up on 1-meter (2018) and 3-meter (2017). Fusaro has earned 22 regular-season dual-meet and invitational first-place finishes.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 1650 Free

Arizona junior Brooks Fail bested the field by seven seconds to take the 1650 free title to start the final night of competition.

Cal junior Sean Grieshop dropped six seconds from his seed time to finish second in 14:51.09, to hold off Stanford senior Grant Shoults (14:52.09) by a second.

Stanford’s Matthew Hirschberger took fourth in 14:52.37, followed by Arizona State’s Benjamin Olszewski (14:52.84), Stanford’s James Murphy (14:55.70), Utah’s Rahiti De Vos (14:57.07) and Utah’s Tyler Klawiter (15:03.75).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Backstroke

Cal junior Daniel Carr dropped nearly two seconds from his prelims time to surge to the 200 backstroke title. He finished in 1:37.87 to hold off the field by more than a second.

It also led a 1-3-4-6-8 finish for the Golden Bears in the event.

Arizona State senior Zachary Poti finished second in 1:39.31, just ahead of Cal’s Hugo Gonzalez (1:39.66) and Bryce Mefford (1:41.09).

Arizona senior Thomas Anderson finished fifth in 1:41.51, in front of another Mefford, Colby Mefford, who finished in 1:42.00.

Stanford junior Johannes Calloni took seventh in 1:42.28 ahead of Cal senior Andy Xianyang Song (1:42.37).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 100 Free

Cal junior Ryan Hoffer made it 3-for-3 with individual Pac-12 titles by winning the 100 free in 41.45.

Hoffer won the 50 free and 100 butterfly earlier in the meet.

Arizona State junior Carter Swift finished second in 42.05, just ahead of Arizona’s Marin Ercegovic (42.31) and ASU teammates Jack Dolan (42.32) and Evan Carlson (42.37).

Cal’s Michael Jensen finished sixth in 42.55, followed by Arizona State’s Cody Bybee (42.74) and Utah’s Liam O’Haimhirgin (42.84).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Breaststroke

Cal sophomore Reece Whitley made it a breaststroke sweep. One night after winning the 100 breast, he crushed the field in the 200 breast, winning in 1:49.85.

He was the only swimmer to go sub-1:50. For that matter, he was the only swimmer to go sub-1:51, 1:52 or 1:53.

Stanford sophomore Daniel Roy finished second in 1:53.06, just ahead of teammate Brennan Pastorek (1:53.40).

Arizona junior Sam Iida took fourth in 1:54.06 ahead of another Stanford swimmer, Hanke Poppe, who finished in 1:54.19.

Cal’s Karl Arvidsson took sixth in 1:54.47, followed by Stanford’s Jonathan Cook (1:55.11) and Cal’s Jason Louser (1:56.07).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Butterfly

Cal senior Zheng Quah put the exclamation point on his stellar meet by winning the 200 butterfly, leading a 1-2 Cal finish.

Quah finished in 1:49.16 to finish ahead of teammate Trenton Julian (1:40.78).

Arizona went 3-4-6-7 behind Brooks Fail (1:42.93), who won the mile earlier in the session, Etay Gurevich (1:43.18), Brendan Meyer (1:43.42) and Brooks Taner (1:44.05).

Stanford’s Alex Liang was fifth in 1:43.35. Arizona State’s Alexander Colson was eighth in 1:45.48.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 400 Free Relay

As Cal ran away with the meet on the final night, the Golden Bears finished with a flourish,

Cal’s Michael Jensen, Pawel Sendyk, Daniel Carr and Ryan Hoffer won the 400 free relay in 2:46.92.

Arizona State’s Carter Swift, Evan Carlson, Cody Bybee and Jack Dolan finished second (2:47.24).

Arizona’s Marin Ercegovic, Jorge Iga, Noah Reid and Thomas Anderson finished third (2:51.05).
