2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships Day 3 Finals: Reece Whitley Throws Down 50.85 100 Breast

The 2020 Pac-12 Men’s Championships continued with Friday’s finals session from Federal Way, Washington.

Stanford had the lead heading into the Friday night, but Cal placed 10 in the A finals for the session. Hugo Gonzalez and Ryan Hoffer started the Golden Bears off with wins on Friday. But it was Reece Whitley who had the big swim of the night, going 50.85 in the 100 breaststroke as Dave Durden‘s Golden Bears won all but one event on the night went from second place to a commanding lead.

Cal now leads the meet with 576 points. Arizona State is second with 414, followed by Arizona (387), Stanford (385.5), Utah (296) and USC (279.5).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 400 IM

Looking to burst into first place, Cal started Friday night strong with a 1-2-3-5 finish in the 400 IM.

Sophomore Hugo Gonzalez dropped five seconds from his prelims time to win in 3:36.60, finishing five seconds ahead of teammate Jason Louser (3:41.98).

Cal’s Sean Grieshop was third in 3:42.19, finishing a second ahead of Arizona’s Etay Gurevich (3:43.19).

Cal’s Chris Jhong took fifth in 3:43.51, ahead of Arizona State’s Benjamin Olszweski (3:44.62), Stanford’s Alex Liang (3:45.28) and Utah’s Jackson Cunningham (3:49.86).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 100 Butterfly

Cal’s Ryan Hoffer made it 2-for-2 by winning the 100 butterfly in 44.85, following up his win in the 50 free on Thursday.

It was another big event for the Golden Bears who went 1-3-4.

Arizona State’s Cody Bybee was second in 45.19, followed by Cal’s Zheng Quah (45.24) and Pawel Sendyk (45.48).

Arizona’s Noah Reid took fifth in 46.15, followed by USC’s Nikola Miljenic (46.16), Arizona State’s Evan Carlson (46.24) and Utah’s Ben Waterman (46.48).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Free

Cal’s Trenton Julian made it three wins in a row for the Golden Bears by winning the 200 free.

Julian touched the wall in 1:33.17 to hold off a trio of Arizona State Sun Devils.

ASU freshman Jack Dolan was second in 1:33.99, followed by fellow freshman Julian Hill (1:33.56) and junior Carter Swift (1:33.64).

Arizona’s Daniel Namir finished fifth in 1:33.96, ahead of teammate Jorge Iga (1:34.12), Arizona State freshman Andrew Gray (1:34.66) and Stanford’s Mason Gonzalez (1:35.84).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 100 Breaststroke

Cal’s Reece Whitley put together a sizzling 100 breaststroke race to win the Pac-12 title.

Whitley won the race in 50.85, the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season, only behind Minnesota’s Max McHugh (50.67).

Stanford’s Hank Poppe took second in 52.33, going 2-3 with teammate Brennan Pastorek (52.37).

Cal’s Karl Arvidsson finished fourth in 52.62, ahead of Utah’s Andrew Britton (52.95) and Jaek Horner (53.14).

Arizona’s Ty Wells (53.29) and Ryan Foote (53.51) rounded out the top eight.

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 100 Backstroke

Arizona State senior Zachary Poti held off a Cal duo to earn the victory in the 100 backstroke, snapping the four-event win streak by the Golden Bears.

Poti touched the wall in 44.98, ahead of Cal’s Daniel Carr (45.18) and Bryce Mefford (46.11).

Arizona’s Thomas Anderson took fourth in 46.28, followed by Stanford’s Benjamin Ho (46.42), Cal’s Andy Xianyang Song (46.80), Cal’s Ethan Young (46.94) and USC’s Jack Kirby (47.04).

Pac-12 Men’s Championships: 200 Medley Relay

Cal continued its dominating night by winning the 200 medley relay, edging Arizona State.

Cal’s Daniel Carr, Reece Whitley, Pawel Sendyk and Ryan Hoffer won in 1:22.16.

Arizona State’s Zachary Poti, Elijah Warren, Cody Bybee and Jack Dolan finished second in 1:22.75.

Stanford was disqualified for an early takeoff by the second swimmer.

Arizona was disqualified for an early takeoff by the third swimmer.
