2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships: Texas A&M Women, Florida Men Claim Titles on Final Night
The fifth and final night of the 2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships saw the Texas A&M women and the Florida men claim 2019 SEC Championship team titles.
Tennessee’s Erika Brown and Florida’s Robert Finke broke SEC meet records in the 100 free and 1650 free respectively. Pool records also fell in the men’s 100 free, women’s 200 breast, and women’s 400 free relay.

Women’s 1650 Free
Florida’s Leah Braswell and Taylor Ault delivered a 1-2 punch in finals of the women’s 1650 free. Braswell, a freshman, was the only athlete in the field to break the 16-minute barrier. She stopped the clock at a time of 15:53.54. Ault, a sophomore, claimed second wiht a 16:00.52, followed closely by Alabama’s Kensey McMahon and her time of 16:00.59.
Emily Hetzer of Auburn finished fourth overall with a time of 16:01.02, while Tennessee’s Amanda Nunan took fifth with a 16:02.34.
Kentucky’s Geena Freriks (16:05.96), Texas A&M’s Haley Yelle (16:09.65) and Kentucky’s Paige Kelly (16:10.41) rounded out the top eight.

Florida freshman Robert Finke swam away from the competition in finals of the men’s 1650 free, clocking a new SEC meet record of 14:23.01. His time overturns Georgia’s Sebastian Roualt’s 2006 record of 14:35.47 and earned him an ‘A’ cut.
Fellow Florida freshman Trey Freeman added a second place finish of 14:48.69. Finke and Freeman’s 1-2 finish earned the Florida Gators a combined total of 60 points and pushed them further away from the other teams in the team rankings. However, it is still a close race with Missouri 45.5 points behind.
South Carolina’s Rafael Davila finished third overall with a time of 14:51.98, while the Georgia duo of Kevin Miller and Walker Higgins took fourth and fifth with times of 14:52.85 and 14:54.05.
South Carolina’s Cody Bekemeyer (14:55.89), Tennessee’s Sam Rice (14:59.30), and Auburn’s Josh Dannhauser (15:00.61) were sixth through eighth.

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt and Ali Galyer collected gold and silver, respectively, in the women’s 200 back. The two were two of the fastest off the start, producing reaction times of 0.56 and 0.55 each. Seidt commanded the race from the beginning, flipping first at every turn before stopping the clock at a time of 1:49.31. Galyer followed close behind with a 1:50.39.
Erin Falconer and Sonnele Oeztuerk, both of Auburn, picked up third and fourth place with times of 1:51.57 and 1:52.37.
Tennessee’s Sinclair Larson turned in a 1:52.44 for fifth, while Kentucky’s Sophie Sorenson was sixth with a 1:52.92.
Sherridon Dressel of Florida (1:53.51) and Emily Cornell of South Carolina (1:54.43) finished seventh and eighth.

Tennessee’s Erika Brown continued to break SEC meet records on Saturday night, toppling the women’s 100 free record with a 46.41. Brown’s record replaces Auburn’s Ariana Vanderpool-Wallace’s 2012 record of 46.61.
Anna Hopkin of Arkansas turned in a 47.10 for second overall, while Georgia’s Veronica Burchill picked up a close third with a 47.30.
The Auburn trio of Claire Fisch (47.62), Julie Meynen (47.80), and Alyssa Tetzloff (48.04) collected fourth through sixth place.
Seventh and eighth place went to Missouri’s Ann Ochitwa (48.07) and Louisiana State’s Haylee Knight (48.32).

Robert Howard of Alabama sprinted to a pool record and a gold medal finish in the men’s 100 free, stopping the clock at a time of 41.57. His time took down Cal’s Anthony Ervin’s 2002 pool record of 41.62 and finished .50 seconds off Florida’s Caeleb Dressel’s SEC meet record of 41.07.
Tennesee’s Kyle Decoursey finished second overall with a time of 41.71, just ahead of Florida’s Maxime Rooney and his time of 41.74.
Mikel Schreuders of Missouri turned in a 41.96 for fourth place, while Texas A&M’s Adam Koster grabbed fifth with a 42.40.
Florida’s Khader Baqlah (42.48), Alabama’s Zane Waddell (42.67), and Kentucky’s Peter Wetzlar (42.77) picked up sixth through eighth place.

Texas A&M’s Anna Belousova collected a narrow victory over teammate Sydney Pickrem in the finals of the women’s 200 breast. Belousova posted a time of 2:04.80, followed closely by Pickrem’s 2:04.89, to earn a new pool record. Her time takes down Texas A&M’s Breeja Larson’s time of 2:05.19 from 2014.
Bailey Bonnett of Kentucky turned in a 2:07.19 for third, while South Carolina’s Albury Higgs was fourth with a 2:07.40.
Nikol Popov of Tennessee took fifth overall with a 2:07.87, just ahead of Florida’s Vanessa Pearl (2:08.51).
Tennessee’s Tess Cieplucha finished seventh with a 2:09.36.
South Carolina’s Emma Barksdale was disqualified from the event.

Texas A&M added another breaststroke victory to their name in the men’s event. Benjamin Walker, a junior, posted a final time of 1:52.55 to earn the gold and improve upon his prelims time of 1:52.74.
James Guest of Georgia collected the silver medal with a time of 1:53.11, followed closely by Florida’s Grant Sanders (1:53.36) and Tennessee’s Matthew Dunphy (1:53.58).
Missouri’s Jordan O’Brien and Auburn’s Tommy Brewer tied for fifth with a time of 1:54.73.
Jack Dalmolin of Georgia and Marco Guarente of Florida were seventh and eighth with times of 1:55.08 and 1:55.12.

Men’s Platform Diving
Zhipeng Zeng of Tennessee won the men’s platform diving event with a total score of 452.25.
Kentucky’s Chase Lane picked up second place with a 424.65, while third ewnt to Louisiana State’s Juan Celaya Hernandez. with a score of 409.35.
Matthew Phillip, also of Louisiana State, added a fourth place finish of 380.00, just ahead of Missouri’s Ike Khamis’ 377.75.
Tennessee’s William Hallam (374.95), Auburn’s Conner Pruitt (374.15), and Alabama’s Robbie Costine (303.50) were sixth through eighth.
Women’s 400 Free Relay
The Auburn women sprinted to a new pool record in the women’s 400 free relay. The relay team of Claire Fisch (47.48), Julie Meynen (47.54), Alyssa Tetzloff (54.73), and Erin Falconer (40.70) posted a combined time of 3:10.45. Their time downs the Cal pool record of 3:11.15 from 2014.
Missouri turned in a second place finish of 3:14.48, whiel third was picked up by Arkansas with a 3:14.65.
Kentucky picked up a close fourth place finish with a time of 3:14.68, followed by Georgia’s time of 3:15.20.
Florida (3:15.58), South Carolina (3:15.64), and Tennessee (3:16.15) were sixth through eighth.

Men’s 400 Free Relay
The Alabama men dashed ahead of the competition to win the 400 free relay and the final event of the 2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships. The relay team of Jonathan Berneburg (43.26), Zane Waddell (41.93), Knox Auerbach (42.63), and Robert Howard (40.70) posted a combined itme of 2:48.52.
The Florida relay team of Maxime Rooney (42.06), Khader Baqlah (42.58), Bayley Main (41.97), and Kieran Smith (42.21) grabbed a close second place finish of 2:48.82.
Tennessee finished third overall with a time of 2:50.12, just ahead of Missouri’s 2:50.61.
Kentucky (2:51.40), Texas A&M (2:52.04), Georgia (2:53.03), and Auburn (2:53.12) took fifth through eighth respectively.
