2019 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships: Aly Tetzloff Among Winners on Night 4

Night four of the 2019 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships saw the Georgia Bulldogs claim titles in both the men’s and women’s 200 fly, while a slew of other schools picked up individual victories as well.

Auburn’s Aly Tetzloff produced a commanding 100 back, while South Carolina’s Itay Goldfaden and Missouri’s Caleb Hicks battled for the men’s 100 breast title.

Women’s 200 Fly

The Georgia Bulldogs put up a 1-3-5 finish as freshmen Olivia Carter and Dakota Luther, along with senior Caitlin Casazza, collected some serious points. After tying for the top seed in the preliminary heats. Carter improved upon her prelims time of 1:54.46 with a final time of 1:53.23, good for an ‘A’ cut, while Luther lowered her seed time to a 1:54.32. Casazza brought in a fifth place finish with a time of 1:55.21.

Similarly, Texas A&M’s Jing Quah and Taylor Pike grabbed second and fourth place for the Aggies. Jing delivered a 1:54.29, while Pike posted a 1:54.43.

Kentucky’s Izzy Gati and Haley McInerny turned in times of 1:55.35 and 1:56.09 for sixth and seventh, followed closely by Florida’s Georgia Marris’ 1:56.15.

Men’s 200 Fly

Camden Murphy added another butterfly victory for the Georgia Bulldogs with a top showing in the men’s 200 fly. Despite trailing Florida’s Maxime Rooney at the 150-yard mark, Murphy turned up the heat to propel forward and touch first with a time of 1:40.62. Murphy, who qualified first for finals, improved upon his prelims time by 1.56 seconds.

Rooney finished second overall with a time of 1:40.87, while South Carolina’s Fynn Minuth took third with a time of 1:41.49.

Texas A&M’s Angel Martinez delivered a 1:41.68 for fifth, followed closely by Missouri’s Micah Slaton and his time of 1:41.86.

Auburn’s Santiago Grassi (1:43.05), Florida’s Erge Gezmis (1:43.90), and Tennessee’s Marc Hinawi (1:44.33) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Back

Auburn senior Aly Tetzloff jumped to the lead in the women’s 100 back and commanded the race from start to finish. Tetzloff was one of three athletes with a reaction time of 0.55; she flipped first at the 50-yard mark with a time of 24.39; and cruised to the finish to improve upon her 50.94 seed with a 50.92.

Kentucky’s Asia Seidt held off Florida’s Sherridon Dressel to claim second with a 51.16, while Dressel slipped to third with a 51.17.

Erin Falconer, also a senior at Auburn, picked up fourth place overall with a time of 51.62, followed by Missouri’s Haley Hynes’ 51.92.

Alabama’s Rhyan White (52.08), Missouri’s Sarah Thompson (52.21), and Florida’s Emma Ball (52.45) completed the top eight.

Men’s 100 Back

Alabama’s Zane Waddell maintained his spot atop the men’s 100 back leader-board with a top showing in finals. Waddell catapulted off the start with a swift first 50 yards, flipping at 21.50. He then continued to pull away from the competition, clocking a final time of 44.77.

Kacper Stokowski of Florida held off a fast charging Joey Reilman of Tennessee to finish second overall. Stokowski stopped the clock at a time of 45.31, just ahead of Reilman’s 43.35.

Georgia’s Javier Acevedo turned in a fourth place finish of 45.42, while fifth place was picked up by Florida’s Bayley Main (45.62).

Missouri’s Daniel Hein (45.69), Texas A&M’s Shaine Casas (45.94), and Missouri’s Nick Alexander (46.13) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 100 Breast

Anna Belousova of Texas A&M raced into the possibility realm for a new SEC meet/pool record in the women’s 100 breast. Belousova delivered a 57.99 to claim gold and move up from her second place seed time of 59.16.

Top seed, Nikol Popov of Tennessee, grabbed second place overall with a time of 58.24, lowering her prelims time of 58.62.

Sofia Carnevale of Georgia rounded out the top three with a showing of 59.19.

Louisiana State’s Summer Spradley collected a fourth place finish of 59.60, followed closely by a tie between Kentucky’s Bailey Bonnett and Alabama’s Justine Macfarlane at 59.72.

Texas A&M’s Kylie Powers and Louisiana State’s Olivia Paskulin completed the top eight with times of 1:00.24 and 1:00.95.

Men’s 100 Breast

The men’s 100 breast final featured a close battle between South Carolina’s Itay Goldfaden and Missouri’s Caleb Hicks. The two battled throughout the entire race, stopping the clock a slim .08 seconds apart. Goldfaden jumped to an early lead in the race, splitting 23.94 in the first 50 over Hicks’ 24.01. Hicks gained some ground in the final 50 yards, splitting 27.79 to Goldfaden’s 27.78, but it was not quite enough. Goldfaden took the victory with a 51.72 over Hicks’ 51.80.

Florida’s Marco Guarente turned in a 52.12 for third place overall, while Missouri’s Jordan O’Brien (52.43) and Texas A&M’s Benjamin Walker (52.55) finished close behind.

Alabama’s Laurent Bams (52.57), Tennessee’s Michael Houlie (52.64), and Auburn’s Tommy Brewer (52.83) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s Platform Diving

Marissa Roth of South Carolina broke the 300-point barrier in the women’s platform diving, posting a final point tally of 304.80.

Kentucky’s Courtney Clark finished second overall with 292.90, just ahead of Texas A&M’s 292.25.

Kyndal Knight of Kentucky turned in a fourth place finish of 253.80, while Missouri’s Sarah Rousseau took fifth with 251.70.

Auburn’s Alison Maillard (247.35), Florida’s Brooke Madden (228.75), and Florida’s Emma Whitner (216.55) were sixth through eighth.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

The Tennessee relay team of Erika Brown (50.88), Nikol Popov (58.05), Madeline Banic (51.32), and Bailey Grinter (48.18) topped the women’s 400 medley relay with a combined time of 3:28.43.

The Auburn women turned in a 3:29.06 for second place, while Kentucky picked up third with a 3:31.27. Missouri grabbed a close fourth place with 3:31.30.

Texas A&M (3:31.68), Florida (3:31.91), Alabama (3:32.65), and Louisiana State University (3:33.10) completed the top eight.

The Missouri men collected a victory in the men’s 400 medley relay to conclude Friday night’s final session. Daniel Hein (45.72), Caleb Hicks (51.51), Danny Kovac (45.23), and Mikel Schreuders (40.91) turned in a combined time of 3:03.37 for the gold.

The Alabama men posted a time of 3:04.17 for second, followed closely by the Texas A&M men’s relay at 3:04.86.

Florida grabbed fourth with a time of 3:05.77, while Tennessee was fifth overall with a 3:06.05.

Georgia (3:06.94), Auburn (3:08.28), and South Carolina (3:08.71) concluded the top eight.
