The first full morning of the 2019 Phillips 66 US National Championships will begin today July 31 from Palo Alto, California. A couple World Championships team members have made the trip from Gwangju to California to put up times in events they might not have swum at Worlds. However, some big names are also out of the meet today including Caeleb Dressel and Hali Flickinger, who won medals in Korea last week. Dressel was set to swim the 100 free while Flickinger was going to do the 200 fly.
Katie Drabot and Regan Smith will lead the charge in the 200 fly today in Flickinger’s absence. Drabot won the bronze medal last week in this event while Smith set two world records in the 100 and 200 back. She is expected to continue her momentum this week in California.
Gianluca Urlando will be one to watch today as well as he is the top seed in the 200 fly, already putting up a monster 1:53 earlier this summer. He is only 17-years-old and will be a senior in high school this fall.
Abbey Weitzeil and Tate Jackson are the top seeds in the 100 free as Weitzeil only swam relays and the 50 free at Worlds while Jackson swam earlier this summer at the World University Games.
Zane Grothe and Haley Anderson are the top seeds in the men’s 1500 and women’s 800 respectively that will be swum tonight.
Prelims begin at 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
