Caeleb Dressel made his way through the first step of his tough double, claiming first place seeds in the men’s 100 fly and 50 free, while Swedish butterfly queen Sarah Sjostrom topped the women’s 50 fly preliminary charts.

Team USA teen Regan Smith lowered her own World Junior Record en route to the top of the qualifiers list in the women’s 200 back, edging out veteran swimmers by more than two seconds.

A team of relatively unknown Italian men made a statement in the preliminary heats, snagging the top qualifying time in the second of three heats. They were followed by the teams from Russia, the USA, and Australia.
