The theme of the 2019 FINA World Championships appears to be shocking news and results as three major swimmers pulled out of the women’s 200 free prior to the start of day three prelims.

Throughout the entirety of the prelims session, Swimming World photographer Becca Wyant was on deck capturing the action and excitement, while Swimming World’s Craig Lord, John Lohn, Liz Byrnes and Andy Ross reported on the action from Gwangju, South Korea.

Illness forced Katie Ledecky out of the prelims heats of the 200 free and she was quickly joined by withdrawals from Australia’s Emma McKeon and Canada’s Taylor Ruck. The withdrawals of three top names out of the 200 free opened the way for Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom to easily grab the top seed going into the semifinals.

Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri claimed the top seed in a very tight men’s 800 free field, including Italian national teammate Gabriele Detti and 400 free World Champion Sun Yang.

19-year-old Kristof Milak of Hungary secured the top seed in the men’s 200 fly with a 1:54.19. He made his World Championships debut in 2017 with a silver medal in the 100 fly, but will be looking for his first World title.
