The final night of the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials saw a Canadian record fall from Sydney Pickrem in the 200 IM final as she moved to fourth in the world rankings for 2019. Pickrem qualified for the Worlds team in her third event after qualifying in the 200 breast and 400 IM. Pickrem will be joined in Gwangju by Kelsey Wog in the 200 IM.

Mackenzie Padington was the only other swimmer to get under the FINA A Cut tonight with her win in the 800 free.

Women’s 150 IM Para

Aly Van Wyck-Smart won the 150 IM, which is an IM event without butterfly, with a 4:50.33. She is in a different classification than Nikita Ens (4:38.50) so she was presented with the win since she was closer to her classification’s world record than Ens was.

Women’s 200 IM

Sydney Pickrem, who just finished her career at Texas A&M, broke her own Canadian record in the 200 IM on the last night of the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials with a 2:08.71 to break 2:09 for the first time. She lowered her own Canadian record of 2:09.07 from last year’s Pan Pacs. She now sits fourth in the world rankings for 2019 behind Japan’s Yui Ohashi (2:07.57), Hiroko Makino (2:08.17) and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (2:08.55).

Pickrem punched her ticket to the 2019 World Championships as she already qualified this week in the 400 IM and 200 breast. Kelsey Wog (2:10.72) finished in second in the 200 IM as she also qualified for the World Championships in this event. She already qualified for Gwangju in the 200 breast earlier in the week.

Third place went to Bailey Andison, who also finished her NCAA career at Indiana. Andison was a 2:11.33 while Mary-Sophie Harvey (2:12.75), Kayla Sanchez (2:13.48) and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson (2:13.91) finished fourth, fifth and sixth.

Men’s 200 IM

Finlay Knox used a great back half to win the men’s 200 IM on the last night of the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials to swim a 2:01.30 to lower his best time by over a half second. Knox was a 2:01.91 to win the bronze medal last summer at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Argentina. No one in the A-Final was under the A standard to get on the World Championships team but Cole Pratt, who finished in second, is already on the team.

Pratt swam a 2:01.51 to get second ahead of Robert Hill (2:01.70) in an exciting finish.

Women’s 800 Free

Mackenzie Padington, who came off a successful NCAAs for Minnesota, won the 800 free final with an 8:36.38 to get under the FINA A Cut and solidify her spot on the FINA World Championships team for Canada to compete in Gwangju. Padington already won the 400 and 1500 free finals this week in Toronto as she will have a full program later on this summer at the World Championships.

Second place went to Emma O’Cronin (8:39.63), who just missed the FINA A Cut at 8:38. She has already finished second earlier in the week in the 400 and 1500 and picked up a spot on the World Championships team in the 400 so she has a chance to add the 800 to her lineup in Gwangju.

Marit Anderson (8:42.35), Katrina Bellio (8:43.31) and Mabel Zavaros (8:48.33) rounded out the top five in the timed final event.

Men’s 1500 Free

In one of the best races of the night, Peter Brothers won the 1500 free final on the final night of the Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto with a 15:27.16 to hold off Michael McGillivary (15:27.52). McGillivary pressed his foot the gas and took the lead around the 1000 and tried to run away with the race but Brothers held his ground and stay composed to win the final with a 57 on the last 100.

The early leader was Ryley McRae, who ended up placing fifth in the final at 15:46.68. He was out in the lead through 700 meters but the rest of the field caught him over the back half and pulled away. Nicolas Masse-Savard (15:39.55) and Raben Dommann (15:42.90) also competed in the final.

Victor Johansson of Sweden and the University of Southern California, placed second overall with a 15:27.52 but cannot represent Canada on the international stage because he is Swedish.
