The 2018 FINA World Cup continued in the Netherlands this week for the third stop in this season’s tour. The first day of the World Cup already saw a world record from Vlad Morozov, and he is back in the water for day two along with some of the world’s top swimmers like Sarah Sjostrom, Katinka Hosszu, Michael Andrew, Kathleen Baker, Ranomi Komowidjojo, Chad le Clos and Blake Pieroni.

Australian Mitch Larkin opened the session as the fastest qualifier in the men’s 50 backstroke, touching is 23.95 to just edge out Ryosuke Irie by .02. These two had a similar set up in the 200 back yesterday, where Larkin and Irie ended up battling way ahead of the field in finals last night.

Femke Heemskerk took the top seed in the women’s 200 free over Sjostrom, 1:53.69 to 1:53.90. Also in that field will be third seed and new world junior record holder Wang Jianjiahe and Heemskerk’s teammate Ranomi Kromowidjojo. Two Americans, Melanie Margalis and Leah Smith, will also be in the final tonight.

The women’s 100 back saw Kira Toussaint, another swimmer from the Netherlands, take this top seed in 56.28. That just edged out world record holder Katinka Hosszu (56.59) and was more than a second ahead of long course world record holder Kathleen Baker (57.45). Also in the mix will be Australia’s Emily Seebohm (57.58).

Sjostrom did return shortly after the 200 free to grab the top seed in the women’s 50 fly, taking the top seed in 25.31. World record holder and world cup record holder Alia Atkinson was the fastest out of the heats of the women’s 100 breast, touching in 1:05.74 ahead of Molly Hannis (1:05.89) and Yulia Efimova (1:06.03).

Blake Pieroni will be in the middle of the pool for the men’s 100 free tonight after leading all qualifiers in 46.84. Qualifying third was Morozov, who set a world record last night in the 100 IM before grabbing gold in the 50 free, so he should be dangerous tonight.

Other top seeds include Daiya Seto in the men’s 200 IM, Peter Stevens in the men’s 50 breast, and Maarten Brzoskowski in the men’s 200 fly. Brzoskowski was ahead of veterans Chad le Clos and Lazlo Cseh in that event, who will both be in the final tonight.
