2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals West: Smith, Urlando Down NAG Records

The final night of the 2018 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals East Championships featured the finals of the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relays. The final session of the meet saw many fast swims, including the downing of two NAG records by Regan Smith and Gianluca Urlando in the 200 fly.

The Crown Canyon Country Club Sharks took home the women’s team title with a total of 286 points, while the Sierra Marlins Swim Team collected the men’s title with 256 points. The combined team score, however, was won by the Irvine Novaquatics with a total of 404 points.

Women’s 1650 Free

Magnolia Aquatics’ Kaitlynn Sims claimed victory in the women’s 1650 free, stopping the clock at a time of 15:57.34. Sims was followed to the wall by Scottsdale Aquatics’ Ashley Strouse and her time of 16:01.20.

Sarah Dimeco of Bellevue Club delivered a 16:09.74 to finish third overall.

Men’s 1650 Free

Noah Brune of Mission Viejo and Tyler Kopp of Katy Aquatic Team held a tight race in the final of the men’s 1650 free, stopping the clock 1.20 seconds apart. Brune took home the title wiht a 15:07.52, while Kopp finished second with a 15:08.72.

Riverside Aquatics’ Jude Williams turned in a 15:11.84 for third overall.

Women’s 200 Back

The women’s 200 back showcased a teenage backstroke showdown as Missoula’s Katharine Berkoff and Aquajets’ Isabelle Stadden battled for the title. Berkoff pulled ahead on the third 50 and succeeded in holding off Stadden in the back half of the race. The two finished with times of 1:50.16 and 1:50.37, with both swimmers touching beneath the 2013 meet record of 1:50.59.

Alexandra Crisera of Beach Cities Swim Team touched third with a time of 1:54.84.

Men’s 200 Back

Peter Larson of Edina Swim Club jumped to an early lead in the men’s 200 back and never looked back. The 17-year-old powered to a 1:41.60 for the gold, followed closely by Billings’ Ethan Harder and his 1:41.94.

Harrison Lierz, swimming unattached, picked up third place with a time of 1:43.70.

Women’s 100 Free

Not long after claiming gold in the women’s 200 back, Katharine Berkoff was back in the pool and collecting another winning title. Berkoff sprinted to a final time of 49.21 to take home the women’s 100 free title.

Gracie Felner of Bellevue Club and Quinn Schaedler of Longhorn Aquatics finished second and third with times of 49.35 and 49.49 respectively.

Jack Armstrong of Houston Bridge added to his gold medals with a top showing in the men’s 100 free. Armstrong held off the competition to finish first with a time of 43.35.

Coby Carrozza of Longhorn Aquatics finished close behind with a 43.57, while Bellevue’s Matt King took third with a 43.62.

Women’s 200 Breast

Crow Canyon’s Zoie Hartman cruised to victory in the women’s 200 breast, delivering a final time of 2:07.52 for the gold.

Second to the wall was Central Iowa’s Gillian Davey and her time of 2:10.52, while Fort Collins’ Coleen Gillilan rounded out the top three with a time of 2:11.03.

Men’s 200 Breast

The men’s 200 breast proved to be one of the fastest events of the night as three men powered to the finish. AJ Pouch, Forrest Frazier, and Ethan Dang turned virtually in sync at the 175 yard mark, but it was Pouch of Team Rebel who would pull ahead. Pouch powered to a 1:55.04 finish for the gold and a new meet record.

Frazier, representing Eastern Iowa Swimming, delivered a time of 1:55.33, which stands as the third fastest 200 breast time for the 15-16 age group.

King Aquatics’ Ethan Dang grabbed third with a time of 1:55.58.

Women’s 200 Fly

Riptide’s Regan Smith “let ‘er rip” in the final of the women’s 200 fly, successfully downing the meet record and the 15-16 year old SCY National Age Group (NAG) record with a time of 1:51.24. Smith’s time took down legendary Mary T. Meagher’s 1981 NAG record of 1:52.99 and downed the 2017 meet record of 1:53.49.

Magnolia Aquatics’ Lillie Nordmann was second overall with a 1:54.42, while Metroplex’s Lindsay Looney turned in a 1:56.20 for third.

Men’s 200 Fly

16-year-old Gianluca Urlando continued to down records that came across his path, finishing the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships West with a new 15-16 NAG record in the men’s 200 fly. His time of 1:40.91 took down Michael Phelps’ 2002 record of 1:42.10.

Bence Szabados of Chicago Wolfpack delivered a 1:44.84 for the silver medal, while Longhorn Aquatics’ Coby Carrozza turned in a time of 1:45.34 for the bronze medal.

Women’s 400 Free Relay

The Bellevue Club relay team of Christina Bradley (49.65), Jazlynn Pak (50.07), Gabby Dang (49.68), and Gracie Felner (49.13) took gold in the women’s 400 free relay with a top time of 3:18.53.

Irvine Novaquatics finished second with a time of 3:18.77, while Crow Canyon took third overall with a 3:20.35.

The Rose Bowl Aquatics relay team of Will Blake (44.89), Ronald Dalmacio (45.23), Mark McCrary (45.10), and Danny Syrkin (44.20) grabbed gold in the men’s 400 free relay with a time of 2:59.42.

Sierra Marlins claimed second with a time of 3:00.49, followed by Irvine Novaquatics’ 3:00.79.
