2018 European Championships Day 4 Prelims: Rikke Moeller Pedersen Top Seed in 200 Breast

Day 4 of the European Championships began with Monday’s preliminary session in Glasgow, Scotland.

Many of the world’s best swimmers look to battle for supremacy and clinch spots in semi-finals later in the day.

Plenty of strong preliminary racing happened with some intriguing semi-final races looming after close calls during prelims.

Men’s 200 Free

The opening event of the day set up what looks to be an exciting semifinal.

Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys took the top seed in the 200 free in 1:46.55, just ahead of Russia’s Mikhail Vekovischev (1:46.67).

Great Britain’s James Guy took the third seed in 1:47.67. Poland’s Jan Switkowski was fourth in 1:48.09, followed by Italy’s Filippo Megli (1:48.15).

Serbia’s Velimir Stjepanovic took the sixth seed in 1:48.22, followed by Russia’s Mikhail Dovgalyuk (1:48.24), Germany’s Jacob Heidtmann (1:48.34), Austria’s Felix Aubock (1:48.37), Israel’s Denis Loktev (1:48.42) and Britain’s Duncan Scott (1:48.53).

Women’s 200 Breast

The 200 breaststroke saw a huge push for Denmark as the country took the top two seeds in the event heading into the semi-finals.

Rikke Moeller Pedersen took the top seed at 2:25.73, closely followed by her compatriot Thea Blomsterberg (2:25.98).

Spain’s Marina Garcia Urzainqui was third (2:26.01), followed by Russia’s Vitalina Simonova (2:26.82), Britain’s Molly Renshaw (2:26.88), Spain’s Jessica Vall Montero (2:26.94), Portugal’s Victoria Kaminskaya (2:27.34), Britain’s Chloe Tutton (2:27.37) and Russia’s Yuliya Efimova (2:27.66).

Men’s 50 Fly

Another race spread with contenders from a plethora of countries came in the 50 fly.

Ukraine’s Andriy Govorov took the top seed in 22.90, ending the field by nearly four tenths of a second.

Britain’s Benjamin Proud was second in 23.29, followed by Nyls Jan Korstainje (23.40) of the Netherlands, Greece’s Kristian Gkolomeev (23.42), Poland’s Konrad Czerniak (23.45), Russia’s Oleg Kostin (23.45), Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh (23.53) and Germany’s Damian Wierling (23.56).

Women’s 100 Back

Three women went sub-minute in the 100 backstroke prelims, and several more were close, setting up an exciting semi-final in the event.

Italy’s Margherita Panziera took the top seed in 59.86, followed by Russia’s Anastasiia Fesikova (59.87), and Denmark’s Mie Nielsen (59.99).

Britain’s Georgia Davies was fourth at 1:00.03, followed by Italy’s Carlotta Zofkova (1:00.07), Kira Toussaint (1:00.12) of the Netherlands, and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu (1:00.15) and Katalin Burian (1:00.28).

Mixed 4×100 Medley Relay

The mixed medley relay saw the Netherlands take the top seed as Maaike Anna De Waard, Arno Kamminga, Joeri Jordi Verlinden and Ranomi Kromowidjojo earn the top seed in 3:45.34.

Germany’s Jenny Mensing, Fabian Schwingenschloegl, Marius Kusch and Annika Bruhn took second (3:46.22).

Russia’s Grigory Tarasevich, Ilya Khomenko, Viktoria Andreeva and Mariia Kameneva took third at 3:46.45.

Women’s 1500 Free

The prelims of the 1500 free saw eight qualifiers make the finals. There are no semi-finals in the distance events.

Italy’s Simona Quadarella took the top seed in 16:05.33. Germany’s Sarah Koehler was second (16:06.72) and Hungary’s Anja Kesely was third (16:19.14).

Liechtenstein’s Julia Hassler took the fourth seed (16:19.89), followed by Slovenia’s Tjasa Oder (16:21.82), Spain’s Jimena Perez Blanco (16:25.02), Portugal’s Tamila Holub (16:25.29) and Germany’s Celine Rieder (16:27.79).
