100 Breast

Indiana’s Ian Finnerty continued the barrier-breaking streak of this week’s championships by becoming the first man to dip under 50-seconds in the 100 breast in an insanely-quick time of 49.69, to win the A final.

Finnerty was out well ahead of the rest of the field at the halfway mark with a split of 23.26, which was nearly identical to the 23.27 he posted during the prelims of the 200 medley relay. Finnerty showed no signs of remorse as he charged home over the last 50 yards in 26.43, solidifying himself as the only man to come back in under 27-seconds.

In second was California’s Connor Hoppe in a 51.16 while USC’s Carsten Vissering touched third in 51.28.

Tennessee’s Peter Stevens swam a 52.11 to win the B final.

100 Back

The NCAA record was safe for the first time tonight, though for the first time in four years, someone not named Ryan Murphy won the 100 back at DI men’s NCAA’s.

With Cal’s backstroke legend gone, this year’s final was wide open and it was NC State’s Coleman Stewart who followed up his B final win in the 100 fly by nabbing his first NCAA title in the event with a time of 44.58, which marks the seventh fastest time in history.

Just .01 behind Stewart was Longhorn John Shebat who touched second in 44.59.

Claiming third in tonight’s A final was NC State’s Andreas Vazaios with his 44.81.

A freshman trio of Texas’ Austin Katz (44.99), USC’s Robert Glinta (45.10) and Louisville’s Nicolas Albiero (45.10) followed behind in fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Rounding out the A final was USC’s Ralf Tribuntsov in a 45.34.

UGA’s Javier Acevedo took the B final in a time of 45.20.

200 Medley Relay

Tonight’s 200 medley relay A final saw USC out-touch Pac-12 rival Cal-Berkely for the win with a pool record of 1:21.82, largely due to Carsten Vissering‘s 50 breast split of 22.58, which is among the fastest splits in history.

California’s squad was composed of all American swimmers, which made them eligible to break the American record, a feat they accomplished with Daniel Carr (20.85), Connor Hoppe (23.01), Justin Lynch (19.77) and Ryan Hoffer (18.25) producing a time of 1:21.88, under their old record they set in during this morning’s prelims of 1:21.88.

Third was awarded to Florida’s squad which featured another 17.37 freestyle split from Caeleb Dressel.

Winning the B final was Alabama’s relay who touched in a time of 1:23.71.

Notably, so far at these NCAA championships, there have been four relay events contested and four different universities have won each event.

3-Meter Diving

Steele Johnson pushed through his ankle injury, which kept him out of competition for a whole 12 weeks, by securing a win on the 3-meter board for Purdue with a score of 499.35.

Johnson, during the final moments, changed his dive list to increase his degree of difficulty, enabling him to earn enough points for the win ahead of Tennessee’s Colin Zeng who scored 495.15 for second. Taking third was last night’s 1-meter champion, Indiana’s Michael Hixon, who scored 481.15.

Rounding out the A final with 381.60 points was Indiana freshman Andrew Capobian.

Winning the B final was Penn State’s Hector Garcia with 406.85 points.
