Jack Dolan Notches Two Wins, Zoe Bartel Sets New Meet Record at Friday Finals of 2017 Winter Junior Nationals West

The Friday finals session of the 2017 Winter Junior Nationals West featured 12 total events. Athletes competed in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, and 200 freestyle relay.

Zoe Bartel‘s new Juniors West meet record in the 100 breaststroke, Katherine Berkoff and Emma Carlton‘s new pool records in the 100 back and 100 fly, Vanessa Pearl‘s four-second win in the 400 IM, Jack Dolan‘s double-header, and Jack LeVant‘s 400 IM win highlighted Friday night finals of the 2017 Winter Junior National Championships West. The two fastest splits of the 200 freestyle relay came from Kylee Alons (22.02) and leadoff Nathan Yates (20.32).

Women’s 400 IM

The top two finishers of the women’s 400 IM dropped almost six seconds each from their prelims swims, with Metroplex Aquatics’ Vanessa Pearl dominating the heat with her time of 4:05.80. Her time was just half a second off of Ella Eastin‘s Juniors West meet record from 2013. Samantha Shelton touched in 4:10.28 for the silver medal, while Luciana Thomas stopped the clock in 4:13.66 for third place.

Reese Hazan was just a second behind in 4:14.50 for fourth, while Kaitlynn Wheeler (4:16.15), Gillian Davey (4:16.27), Mikki Thompson (4:16.38), and Ashlynn Fiorilli (4:18.13) also competed in the championship final.

Kaitlynn Sims of Magnolia Aquatic Club put up a strong time of 4:16.40 to win the B final, while 16-year-old Riley Lexvold of Mission Viejo won the C final with a quick 4:14.89.

Men’s 400 IM

Jack LeVant added a second win to his impressive meet performance in the men’s 400 IM, lowering his prelims time by almost four seconds and blowing away the field with a time of 3:45.75, mainly due to his 50.76 first 100 fly split. Caleb Aman of Lane Four Aquatic Club put up a strong back half to finish in second place with a 3:49.54. Jackson Cunningham of Boise YMCA was close behind for the bronze with his time of 3:50.09. Daniel Roy of KING Aquatic Club finished in fourth, putting up a time of 3:52.35.

Garrett Clasen of West Chicago Sharks (3:52.54), Ethan Heasley of Hillsboro Swim Team (3:53.20), Kevin Vargas of La Mirada Armada (3:53.26), and Logan Davis of North Texas Nadadores (3:55.83) rounded out the championship final.

William Goodwin won the B final with a 3:52.89.

Women’s 100 Fly

Bellingham Bay’s Emma Carlton and Magnolia Aquatic Club’s Lucie Nordmann faced off in finals of the women’s 100 butterfly, with Carlton stepping up to set a new pool record and take the gold medal in 52.11. Nordmann was just behind in 52.31. Coleen Gillilan of Fort Collins Area Swim Team rounded out the top three finishers with a 52.60. Dakota Luther of Austin Swim Team was just off the top three with her time of 52.68. Nordmann’s 15-year-old sister Lillie Nordmann finished in fifth place in 52.81.

Emma Sticklen (52.90), Ruby Martin (53.54), and Kylee Alons (54.08) also competed in the championship final.

Men’s 100 Fly

Peak Swimming’s Ethan Hu just out touched Tigershark Swim Team’s Noah Henry in the men’s 100 butterfly, 47.14 to 47.19. Six of the top eight qualifiers were under the 48.00-second mark, with the bronze going to Gianluca Urlando of Davis Aquadarts in third place with a 47.36.

Nathan Yates (47.72), Connor Lee (47.97), and Seth Hendrix (47.99) also snuck under the milestone, touching fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.

Van Mathias and Aaron Pang completed the top eight finishers with a tie at 48.34.

Metroplex Aquatics’ Jason Park, however, posted the top time of the evening out of the C final, sprinting to a quick 46.99 with a second-50 split of 24.76.

Women’s 200 Free

15-year-old Ella Ristic of Irvine Novaquatics just outtouched Luther in the women’s 200 freestyle, finishing as the only woman under 1:47.00 with a 1:46.90. Luther finished in 1:47.00. Isabelle Henig of Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics touched in 1:47.18 for the bronze medal.

Monica Gumina of Magnolia Aquatic Club was fourth with her time of 1:47.27, Samantha Pearson of Brea Aquatics touched in 1:47.41 for fifth, and Ayla Spitz of Irvine Novaquatics finished sixth in 1:47.52.

The final heat was a competitive one, with seventh-place Diana Dunn also going under 1:48.00 to touch in 1:47.80. Quinn Schaedler of Austin Swim Team placed eighth in the championship final with a 1:48.39.

Martina Thomas of Razorback Aquatics’ time of 1:47.30 was good to win the B-final.

Men’s 200 Free

Jack Dolan of Rockwood Swim Club overtook top seed Patrick Callan of Trident Aquatics for the win, stopping the clock in 1:34.78. Patrick Callan held on for the silver, finishing with a time of 1:35.44 to third-place William Bresette of Empire KC Swim Club’s 1:36.43.

Daniel Krueger of McFarland Spartan Sharks and Michael Petrides of Kamehama Swim Club tied for fourth place, touching the wall simultaneously at 1:36.49.

Peter Larson (1:37.63), Kyle Leach (1:37.78), and Shawn Lou (1:38.73) rounded out the A-final.

Women’s 100 Breast

Zoe Bartel of Fort Collins Area Swim Team dipped under the 59.00 second mark in the women’s 100 breaststroke, touching in a new Juniors West meet record of 58.98 for first place. Zoie Hartman of Crow Canyon was the only other competitor under the minute mark, finishing in a quick 59.84 for second place, while Gillilan finished in 1:00.11 for the bronze medal.

Claire Grover of Scottsdale Aquatic Club just beat Kaitlyn Doblder of The Dolphins Portland Swimming for fourth place, finishing in 1:00.51 to Dobler’s 1:00.57. Pearl put up a 1:00.98 for sixth.

Hanna Newby (1:01.30) and Eleanor Jew (1:01.47) rounded out the championship final.

Men’s 100 Breast

Team Rebel Aquatics’ Zane Backes bested the field in the men’s 100 breaststroke by a second, finishing at 53.16 to second-place Ethan Dang of KING Aquatic Club’s 54.16. William Myhre of St. Charles Swim Team was a fingernail off the silver medal, touching in 54.17 for bronze. Ben Dillard of Sierra Marlins was fourth with a 54.68.

Fifth place went to Ananias Pouch of Team Rebel Aquatics in 54.81, Andrew Britton of Ripon Aquatics was sixth with his time of 54.91, and Shane Blindman (St. Croix Swim Club) and Roy (55.32) rounded out the top eight finishers.

Women’s 100 Back

Katharine Berkoff of Missoula Aquatic Club lowered her own new pool record, set this morning, underneath the 52-second mark to a blazing 51.95. Lucie Nordmann notched another silver medal with a second-place time of 52.16, while Julia Cook of Aggie Swim Club was third with a 52.40.

Men’s 100 Back

Dolan continued his winning streak in the men’s 100 backstroke, touching a half second ahead of the rest of the field in a 47.10. Urlando nabbed the silver with his time of 47.62, while Henry rounded out the podium in 47.90.

Walker was just off in 48.01 for fourth place, while Gavin Olson of Foothills Swim Team was fifth with his time of 48.08. Sixth place went to Kyle Millis of Bellevue Swim Club in 48.79.

Peter Simmons of Aggie Swim Club and Isaac Gwin of Nitro Swimming tied for eighth place in the A final at 48.83.

Women’s 200 Free Relay

In the final event of the evening, Audrey Reimer, Bartel, Gillilan, and Alons combined to win the women’s 200 freestyle relay for Fort Collins Area Swim Team with a time of 1:30.41, just 0.32 off of SwimMAC Carolina’s 2015 combined SC Junior Nationals meet record. Alons split a notable 22.02 on the anchor leg. It was an exhilaratingly battle for the rest of the heat, with the top seven finishers under 1:33.00. Delta Aquatics A-relay finished second, as Grace Cooper, Georgia White, Mariana Kraus, and Maxine Parkinson put together a silver time of 1:32.52. Brea Aquatics finished third (Emily Trieu, Justine Kozan, Zephanie Koh, and Pearson), just behind in 1:32.60.

Magnolia Aquatic Club’s team of Gumina, the Nordmann’s, and Bronwyn Tuff posted a fourth-place time of 1:32.69, just out of the top three.

Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics (1:32.76), Crow Canyon (1:32.86), Irvine Novaquatics (1:32.95), and Austin Swim Club (1:33.24) rounded out the top eight teams.

Men’s 200 Free Relay

The men’s 200 freestyle relay also saw a close top eight.

Rancho San Dieguito Swim team of Dylan Delaney, Brandon Kulik, Stephan Lukashev, and Tyler Gruwell won the event in 1:22.57, just beating Irvine Novaquatics’ team of Sean Slusiewicz, Owen Kao, Shawn Lou, and Hunter Hitchens who combined for a second-place time of 1:22.66. Yates led off for third-place Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics in the fastest split of the evening, a flat start 20.32. Brooks Taner, Brian Copley, and Justin Culetu brought it home in 1:23.32.

Chicago Wolfpack (1:23.39) and Academy Bullets (1:23.42) finished fourth and fifth.

North Texas Nadadores and Nitro Swimming tied for sixth place with a time of 1:23.78. Eighth place went to Alamo Area Aquatic Club in 1:23.99.
