2017 NCSA Junior Nationals: Day Two Finals Has Nations Capital Widening Team Lead

Women’s 200 Backstroke

To kick off night two, Suburban’s Alexandra Sumner held onto her top spot, winning in 1:52.33. She was over two seconds ahead of the next closest competitor, Kristen Romano of Long Island, who finished second in 1:54.53. Nation’s Capital’s Phoebe Bacon was just behind in 1:54.86 for third.

City of Mobile’s Paige Madden finished fourth in 1:55.39. She was followed by Hopkins Mariner’s Erin Earley, who placed fifth in 1:55.47. Madison Homovich of Marlins of Raleigh was sixth in 1:55.88.

Seventh place went to Lea Gwennap of Nation’s Capital in 1:56.34. Norther Kentucky Clippers’s Amanda Smith rounded out the top eight in 1:56.53.

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Metro Atlanta’s Christopher Thames surged to the win with a two second drop from this morning to go 1:43.54. He was followed by NOVA of Virginia’s Jacob Johnson, who touched second in 1:44.36. Just behind Johnson was Will Cumberland of Nation’s Capital in 1:44.47 for third.

Fourth place went to Jack Dahlgren of Aquajets in 1:45.85. Cincinnati Marlins’s Justin Grender placed fifth in 1:46.06.

Machine’s Christian Ginieczki came in sixth place in 1:46.35. Lane 4’s Caleb Aman was seventh in 1:46.80, while Nation’s Capital’s Sean Conway was eighth in 1:47.17.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

16 year old Julia Cook of the Aggie Swim Club was the only female to break the 49 second barrier, winning the race in a time of 48.91. In second place behind her was Southwest Stars’s Kaitlyn Schorr, who touched in 49.23. A pair of 15 year olds placed third and fourth, with Christiana Regenauer of Condors just out touching Nation’s Capital’s Katelyn Mack in 49.47 and 49.50, respectively.

Fifth place went to Greater Tampa’s Morgan Tankersley in 49.58. She was just ahead of Genevieve Pfeifer of CSP Tideriders, who finished sixth in 49.61.

Patriot’s Madeline Smith was seventh in 49.95, while Aquajets’s Carly Quast was eighth in 50.06.

Men’s 500 Freestyle

Baylor’s Robert Freeman dominated the men’s 500 freestyle, dropping four seconds from prelims to go 4:18.99. Talmadge Davis of Team Greenville was the runner-up, finishing second in 4:21.05. Just behind Davis was Nation’s Capital’s Matthew Hirschberger, who touched third in 4:21.52.

Eric Knowles of the Dayton Raiders placed fourth in 4:23.29. Naval Academy Aquatic Club’s William Iv Roberts was fifth in 4:25.54.

Lane 4’s Peyton Werner came in sixth in 4:26.46. He was followed by the Jersey Wahoo’s Luke Snyder, who was seventh in 4:26.94. Colton Paulson of Redbird finished eighth in 4:31.09.

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

Margaret Aroesty of Long Island was the lone swimmer to break one minute in the women’s 100 breaststroke, finishing first with a time of 59.98. She was followed by Houston’s Kylie Powers, who touched second in 1:00.65. Third place went to Ema Rajic of the Hudson Explorers in 1:01.23. Rajic just out touched Nation’s Capital’s Abigail Harter, who was fourth in 1:01.25.

Mundelein Mustang’s Valerie Tarazi came in fifth place at 1:01.31. Following her was Alexis Yager of Academy Bullets in 1:01.84 for sixth place. Yager was immediately followed by Marlins of Raleigh’s Ashley McCauley in 1:01.85 for seventh. Eight place went to New Trier’s Ingrid Wall, who swam a time of 1:02.71.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

Penn Charter’s Reece Whitley dominated the men’s 100 breaststroke. Finishing first in 52.00, he dropped over two seconds from prelims and was just off the NAG record of 51.76. Eli Fouts of Rockville-Montgomery and William Myhre of St. Charles tied for second behind Whitley in 54.40. Nation’s Capital’s Timothy Wu was just behind for fourth in 54.46.

Wu’s teammate, Spencer Rowe, captured fifth place with a time of 54.72. Following him was another tie, this time for sixth place between Manhattan Makos’s Dillon Hillis and New Trier’s Charles Scheinfeld. Both touched in 54.85. Chattahoochee Gold’s Jack Dalmolin rounded out the top eight in 55.23.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Club Wolverine’s Sierra Schmidt picked up her second win in as many days, placing first in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.11. Schmidt was just ahead of Highlanders’s Carley Lowe, who finished second in 1:56.59. In her second event of the night, Nation’s Capital’s Harter placed third in 1:57.40.

Christin Rockway of Tampa Bay came in fourth with a time of 1:57.66. Behind her in fifth place was Luciana Thomas, representing the Razorbacks, in 1:57.84.

Sixth place went to Homovich of Marlins of Raleigh in 1:59.27. Northern Kentucky Clippers’s Mallory Beil was seventh in 1:59.36, while Hilton Head’s Chloe Corbitt was eighth in 2:00.27.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

Samuel Pomajevich of Nation’s Capital won the men’s 200 butterfly handily, finishing in 1:41.88. His time was three seconds faster than the next closest competitor, Camden Murphy of Kingfish, who was second in 1:44.91. Pomajevich’s teammate Darren Durocher placed third in 1:45.56.

Fourth place went to Marlins of Raleigh’s Zachary Brown with a time of 1:46.19. Peter Lochmaier of Baylor came in fifth in 1:46.76.

Orry Zayit, representing Long Island, finished in sixth in 1:48.62. Machine’s Ginieczki was just behind in 1:48.93 for seventh. Eight place went to the Naval Academy Aquatic Club’s Roberts in 1:50.74.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay

The Long Island Aquatic Club claimed the women’s 800 freestyle relay. The team of Romano (1:47.11), Chloe Stepanek (1:48.69), Lauryn Johnson (1:50.32), and Aroesty (1:46.90) combined for a time of 7:13.02. Finishing second behind them was Nation’s Capital’s A team of Sinead Eksteen (1:47.47), Madeline Laporte (1:49.37), Claire Nguyen (1:50.57), and Mack (1:46.58) in 7:13.99. NASA Wildcat Aquatics claimed third place, with Olivia Andrew (1:48.66), Annika Wagner (1:48.57), Sofia Vargas (1:52.19), and Ella Tierney (1:46.80) touching in 7:16.22.
