Whitley and Kalisz Set for Showdown after Day Two Prelims of 2017 AT&T Winter Nationals

After relay-only races last night, the nation’s fastest swimmers are itching to dive in for their individual races in Columbus, Ohio for the second day of competition at the 2017 AT&T Winter Nationals.

Today’s events include:

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Louisville’s Mallory Comerford posted the fastest time here with 4:38.96, establishing herself as the only woman to dip under 4:40. Just behind her was her teammate Sophie Cattermole in 4:40.47. Taking the third spot in that heat and overall was Ashley Neidigh. Fourth place was nabbed by Erica Sullivan who blew away her heat by over four seconds in her time of 4:41.29. Taking the top position in the B final will be Louisville’s Arina Openysheva while rounding out the B final will be Cincinnati’s Sarah Laabs. Leading the C final tonight will be Liberty Williams while Miklaya Murphy will take the final spot in the D final.

Men’s 500 Freestyle

Gator Swim Club’s Mitch D’Arrigo blew away the first circle-seeded heat in 4:13.70 on his way to posting the top time, five seconds ahead of Marcelo Acosta out of Louisville who posted a 4:18.94 good enough for second in the heat and third overall due to Zane Grothe‘s 4:14.46 from the final heat. Taking the middle lane in the B final tonight will be Christopher Bready with his 4:22.49 while Saint Louis University’s Ryan McCoy will take the final spot in the B final. Matias Koski earned the top spot in the C final with a 4:25.93 while Samuel Steele turned in a 4:28.49 will round out the C final heat tonight.

Women’s 200 IM

There were no surprises when we saw 2016 Olympic gold medalist Melanie Margalis earn the middle lane in the A final tonight with a 1:54.74. Close behind was GSC’s Isabel Ivey in 1:57.26, while Rachel Bradford-Feldman took third in 1:57.58. Taking the top spot in the B final tonight will be Grace Oglesby out of Louisville while her teammate Morgan Friesen will round out the B heat in 2:02.40. Earning the middle lane in the C final was Graceanne Long from Louisville with her time of 2:02.42. Cincinatti’s Samantha Wheatley will round out the C final with her time of 2:03.59.

Men’s 200 IM

Olympian Chase Kalisz made his mark today when he produced a 1:43.16, which makes him the fastest qualifier going into tonight’s finals. Penn Charter’s Reece Whitley cruised to a 1:43.86 to take the second spot in the A final while Michael Andrew took third in 1:44.27. In the middle lane of the B final will be Cal’s Jacob Pebley with his 1:46.59. A tie for 15th place occurred between Louisville’s Etay Gurevich and Pleasanton Seahawks’ Christopher Jhong in 1:48.00, which will round out the B final. No swim-off is required since the athletes tied for 15th and not 16th place. MSU’s Piper Scott went 1:48.03 to earn the middle lane in the C final while NCAP’s Steven Thalblum will round out that heat with his qualifying time of 1:48.98.

Women’s 50 Freestyle

Kelsey Worrell out of Cardinal Aquatic Club turned in a 21.73 to take the middle lane in the A final tonight. Worrell was closely followed by Margo Geer in 21.93 and Mallory Comerford in 22.03. Taking the middle lane in the B final tonight will be Amanda Kendall with her time of 22.52. NCAP’s Katelyn Mack earned the right to round out the B final with her 22.73. Ohio’s Corrin Van Lanen and Louisville’s Avery Braunecker tied for 17th, with no swim-off required, in 22.74. Rounding out the C final tonight will be youngster Chloe Grimme out of Pipeline Swimming.

Men’s 50 Freestyle

American sprint veteran Nathan Adrian nabbed the number one spot out of this morning’s prelims with a 19.42, followed closely by Kasey Foley in 19.57. Taking the third spot was Andrej Barna out of Louisville in 19.61. Trojan Swim Club’s Jesse Novak will take lane four in the B final by virtue of his 19.97 he posted this morning while OSU’s Michael Lynch will round out that B final tonight. Earning the top spot in the C final was Mossimo Chavez with a 20.30. Louisville’s Abel Aulbach will round out the C final with his prelim time of 20.45.
