2016 USA Swimming Trials: Day 5 Prelims Live Recap

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Nineteen year old Abby Weitzeil clocked a 53.58 to move to eighth in the world this year and take the top slot in semifinals.

Thirty year old veteran and American record holder Amanda Weir grabbed the second seed this morning with a 53.76.

Dana Vollmer is already Rio bound with her 100 butterfly swim and this morning she qualified third for the 100 freestyle semifinal in 53.80. She led the first circle seeded heat at the 50 in 25.77. Her final time was only .21 off her season best.

After showing signs of her sprint speed through all three 200 freestyle swims, Simone Manuel finished fourth this morning in 53.84.

Kelsi Worrell swam next to her 100 butterfly competition this morning. With a 54.02 she qualified fifth. Katie Ledecky is shooting for her spot on the 400 freestyle relay with a 54.04, sixth place prelims swim.

2012 Olympian Lia Neal put herself in contention again with a 54.06, good for seventh. In her first race of the week, Madison Kennedy swam a 54.24 to enter semifinals in eighth.

Swimming a bit more relaxed after securing an individual swim in Rio, Missy Franklin touched in 54.41 for the ninth seed.

Olivia Smoliga had a .04 second drop to take the tenth spot for semifinals. Natalie Coughlin posted a 54.73 this morning in her quest for fourth Olympic Games.

Shannon Vreeland and Margo Geer tied for 12th in 54.87, just ahead of Allison Schmitt in 54.95. Mallory Comerford snagged 15th with a 55.15.

Kirsten Vose led the way entering the circle seeded heats with a 55.32. The finished 16th this morning.

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Cal’s Jacob Pebley has been as fast as 1:56.38 this season, the world’s tenth best time entering prelims in Omaha. This morning he swam an incredibly smooth 1:56.29 to improve that time and tie his personal best.

Top seed Tyler Clary revived his Olympic dream with a 1:56.85 to take the second spot into semifinals.

Ryan Murphy entered with the fourth best time in the world this year of 1:54.94. The short course American record was nearly a second behind his teammate in an easy 1:57.35.

Seventeen year old Michael Taylor of Dynamo earned another semifinal swim with his 1:57.92. Robert Owen (1:58.01) took fifth just ahead of Sean Lehane (1:58.04).

Hennessey Stuart clocked a 1:58.32 for the seventh spot spot. Austin Katz of Sarasota YMCA returns eighth in 1:59.05.

Rio bound Jay Litherland stopped the clock in 1:59.30 for ninth.

Joey Reilman of Tennessee touched in 1:59.55. Justin Ress (1:59.60), Carter Griffin (1:59.74), and Patrick Mulcare (1:59.86) finished 11th through 13th.

After a tough third place finish in the 100 backstroke, Matt Grevers just slipped into semifinals with a 2:00.03.

With a 2:00.04 Drew Cosgarea held the top time entering the circle seeded heats and that swim held up for 15th. Jake Taylor completes the semifinals in a 2:00.31.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

In London Micah Lawrence was sixth in this event. The 25 year old swam a 2:26.27 for the top seed this morning.

Texas A&M’s Bethany Galat had an excellent back half and took the second seed in 2:26.72. That was nearly a three second drop. Annie Lazor was third in 2:27.48.

With an Olympic ticket already booked, Lilly King returns to semifinals fourth in the 200 breaststroke. The short course American record holder touched in 2:27.55. She led the way at the 100 in 1:10.24.

After finishing third in the 100, Molly Hannis is shooting for a spot in the 200. This morning she clocked a 2:27.62 for the fifth seed. 2012 Olympian Breeja Larson will return sixth in 2:27.65.

Louisville’s Andee Cottrell (2:27.67) and Tuscon Ford’s Emma Schoettmer (2:28.01) also earned second swims.

2015 national champion Laura Sogar touched in 2:28.15, for the ninth spot. Emma Reaney followed in 2:28.57.

Olivia Anderson was the first swimmer to crack the 2:30 barrier and led the way heading into the circle seeded heats with her 2:28.60. That time held up for 11th overall.

Sarah Henry came back from her tough 400 IM finals swim to take the 12th seed in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:28.74.

Fifteen year old Zoe Bartel touched in 2:28.94 in heat ten and also made it back in 13th. Taylor Vargo (2:29.98) will be 14th.

Melanie Margalis has had an impressive meet, and this morning she just slipped into semifinals with a 15th place 2:29.03. Emily Escobedo swam a 2:29.12 for the final spot.

Katie Meili entered the event with a season’s best, world’s 13th 2:23.69. Today she touched in 2:30.66, out of the semifinals.

Men’s 200 IM

After scratching his 200 backstroke to focus on this 200 IM, the World Record holder Ryan Lochte touched in 1:58.05, now the eighth best in the world this year. Before this morning, he had been as fast as 1:58.43 this season.

Michael Phelps entered with the fourth best time in the world this year of 1:57.90. This morning he clocked a 1:58.95 for the second seed.

The University of Georgia’s Gunnar Bentz touched in 1:59.46 for the third spot. Cal’s Andrew Seliskar was the first swimmer of the morning under two minutes with a fourth seeded 1:59.89. Austin Surhoff (2:00.26) placed fifth this morning.

In his second swim of the morning, Jay Litherland (2:00.35) grabbed the sixth spot. Club Wolverine’s Kyle Whitaker (2:00.36) was seventh.

Short course American record holder David Nolan finished in 2:00.50 for the eighth spot in semifinals. Michael Andrew moved up to ninth in the 17-18 National Age Group rankings with a 2:00.79.

NC State’s Christian McCurdy had the top time of 2:01.19 entering the circle seeded heats. That swim will earn him a semifinal berth.

Max Williamson (2:01.46), Abraham Devine (2:01.51), Nick Thorne (2:01.61), Adam Hinshaw (2:01.72), Brandon Fiala (2:01.91), Michael Weiss (2:01.96) complete tonight’s semifinals.

Third seed Will Licon and Chase Kalisz did not swim the event.
